Is it good to change page content frequently?

Prompted by the discussion about "is it good to change your page title" I wanted to provide a little case study on one of the pages I have been working on.

PageRank 4 page. It was ranking around positions 8-14 for my key terms for the past two weeks or so.

I added 1 bullet point to this page and literally the next day I had an average drop of rankings of about 10-25 positions.

A couple of days later, I commented out the new information I added to the page.

The very next day, my positions bounced up. Not as good as they were, but very close.

This is conclusive in my mind to say - leave your page alone!

Either create a new page if you need a new topic or make a new page and 301 redirect to it.

Haha, well said. Another thing I noticed is that the PageRank that was at 4 has gone to 0. Interesting stuff. Hope someone else can gain from that tid bit.

Interesting point about the bullets. thanks for the tip! I don't why you want to change content though, i thought adding content instead of changing it is better?

Interesting that Google would do that for a bullet point. Content is content whether it is a list form or not.

Once the page content is built you should check it with the SEOmoz tool, see it meets with the A+ grade. One should not change the homepage content especially when the homepage has a good PR.

hmm eh so the PR will drop if we change the content. Does that apply to the whole site or just the homepage?

it all depends what you are doing, the content on your blog homepage changes every time you make a post. Info sites the content will stay the same it just depends on what you are trying to achieve.

You should consider to add new unique contents frequently instead of change the page content frequently. If you want to update the current indexed page content, it should be added more content or little modification only necessary. Google and other search engines do not like the indexed page content to be modified too frequently. It would reduce their relevance in search results.

Example - Your aa.html has been cached content with "blue hair" wording attached and get ranking for keyword "blue hair". Then you change the content on aa.html later to "red hair" so the current ranking for "blue hair" is not accurate for users who visited a site from keyword "blue hair".

I would not advise to change the content frequently, but make sure that you keep on adding new content

its lot easier just to add new content than change the existing ones. unless you have a page that requires updating a lot for recent news, you dont have to change existing pages. just keep adding new pages and content on a regular or occasional basis at least which will be fine

Now, as I understand it, a blog is seen by the SE's as adding new content, but what about a forum? Would the SE's view forum postings as new content? I have one on my site and the bots are in there daily. I assume they check the rest of the site as well, but do not know what for certain.

I agree... I think the "constantly changing" the content is a myth some people have just not left behind. I think that if something is working, WHY change it. So continue adding valuable content, but if it is working leave it alone. Add content in other pages linked to your site and continue building backlinks.

Interesting! I never realised that small changes of indexed content could have such major effects. I'll be sure to steer clear of making any unnecessary changes!

I wonder what this means for the "get decent rankings and then add affiliate links" approach?

Changing your existing content too often is of course not advisable for reasons as rightly pointed out by 'Sxperm' but I doubt very much if an addition or deletion of a bullet point would have such drastic end result on your serps and to even changing your PR from 4 to 0!
Perhaps... it was just coincidental and there would be something more serious responsible for such a change! :(

I doubt Google even crawls sites on a daily basis.
