    For software: Start with C programming. It's easy and the basics of any computer language. You can can forward to object oriented languages like C++ and Java.

    For web: Start with HTML and build basic web pages. Then learn XHTML, CSS, Javascript, PHP and so on.

    Starting with a language like VB would be the easiest... with drag and drop you can learn the event structure easily. Then you can move onto why things work the way they do. (and vs express is free) :)

    You don't need to go to university to learn programming. If you are a technology enthusiast and like to stay in-front of computers for long hours, you can be a good programmer by yourself. There are many ways to learn and some of which are noted in above posts. Make sure you study one part at a time. Don't try to do everything together which is not possible and also may confuse you. There are very good books like Sams: Teach XXXX yourself in 21 days. You may start with C++. You can download one free C++ IDE from the following list.

    Microsoft® Visual C++® 2010 Express: Most preferred
    Code::Blocks
    Dev-C++

    Read this post first if you are going to start programming.
