It is more than just startup time. Windows 7 handles internet connections in a way that speeds it up very noticeably. Definitely fast than XP and even Vista.

Windows 7 is faster than Windows XP on a PC with 1GB + RAM.

I think the original question was that if the system configuration is same for both OS then which one will be more faster? and I think of course it will be XP because it is lighter than Win 7, just take a look at the difference between disk space usage of both OS...!

Windows 7 is faster than Windows XP with the same system configuration (provided the RAM is 1GB+ on the computer). It's exactly not true that Widows 7 is loaded with more applications. Though the GUI of Windows 7 require more memory than Windows XP because of the features like Search 4, but a lot of unnecessary inbuilt tools are not loaded in Windows 7 by default - one good example is the telnet client tool is not available in Windows 7 by default (though its there in Windows XP). So Windows 7 is more secure as well than Windows XP (apart from being fast). Windows 7 hibernates almost 5X faster than Windows XP.

I'm totally agree with Digital_shubhi. As far as i can see, most notebook and desktop already came out with their latest configuration and has been optimize for running Win 7 at optimum. Taking my notebook as example, which ACER 4736G series which came in full spec ( Intel Core 2 Duo Proc, NVIDIA graphic card, 4GB ram and 500 GB hdd and plus other option) and running in Win 7 Home Premium which i found the performance is much better than when i'm using Win XP and Vista. Instead, i dont like to put a lot of graphic on my desktop, so i can just tweak the setting based on my what i'm comfortable with. Not just graphic, i also tweak the service during startup to make the load much much faster than my previous OS that i've been experienced.
Well, it's just my opinion, no offense though. Cheer !!

Windows 7 installed faster and performed faster than either XP or Vista. The final code of Windows 7 should be even more robust and faster than the beta version.

I find Windows 7 to be way faster than XP, but that's probably because I also formated my PC at that time.

    Not sure.

I love the speed of my windows 7.
I'm pretty sure the windows 7 on my laptop loads faster than my PC's vista.
