I don't understand, why there are hell lot of useless directories

What is the real purpose to create directories, is it just to make some bucks or to give some useful thing back to community?

 

Neither

It just some wannabe Big Shot with meaningless domain and free web hosting has a choice
between starting Gifts or Directory site and for some stupid reason decided Directory will do.

Most people starting a directory do it to make money. Unfortunately, most of them also want to make money without doing much work so there are a lot of poorly edited directories out there.

If you look hard enough you can find quality directories where the people are serious about working and starting a valuable resource.

 

they will just be useless if directories has no pr. but if they have about pr4 and up, sure the owner earns.

 

If the directory gets some good pr rank some people might purchase featured or better placement on higher ranking pages. So the owner could make some money if the pr is up. Like any site some people get started with it and find out there is more work than they thought, or than they want to deal with. Some loose interest in their site, sometimes other projects and ideas come up. They are not making as much as they thought they might, you really never know.

 

Well, where one person might create one directory, another person thinks its a good idea to create a hundred, or a thousand of them, so you get a lot of poor quality ones as a result of this.

 

I used to submit to PR0 directory. But I start thinking it is wasting my time. Just like pligg sites, many directory sites went down within a few months.

 

Most of this kind of directories are built up for get rich quick purpose. They do register on cheap domain like info or co.cc and get them installed with some popular script such as PHPLD with a category dumped from sql file and that's all.

However, we should ot assume all new directories are the same. There are many of new general directories that built up with quality in mind.

 

Why the hell are there so many useless blogs? Why the hell are there so many useless forums? Et cetera...

The problem isn't the type of website (directory, in this case). The problem is that the overwhelming majority or all websites are pretty useless when you think about it.

 

I agree 100% on that statement.

 

Agree, the problem with the guy who's started directory site without realizing that he will have to
invest 2 - 4 hours of his time every day to run that directory.

There are more useless directories and as to why? Because they can and they eventually lose interest in the work they started intially.

 

There was an euphoric stage associated with directories couple of years back and people hopped on to this band wagon... left, right and center!
I have personally seen many people making one directory after another.. the number going to 10+ in a short span of six months!

It is obvious that when the number game takes over... quality does suffer!

I agree with the fact that there are many useless directories out there and nowadays, it's getting harder and harder to find a good one with a decent rank.

However, I remember having a link directory and I got it to a pagerank of 4 and made a decent amount of money. I later sold it to someone who actually has 4+ link directories with quality and great PRs. So, it leaves me to say that yes... thank god, there are actually people out there that are serious about link directories.
