I recently purchased Ijoomla seo plugin and after implementing it I get a double title for my pages

    <title> AND <meta name="title"

I know these 2 are completely different and serve different purposes, but is there a reason not to use both? Will it hurt my onpage SEO in any way? What are your thoughts on using both?. Thanks a lot guys

<title> is the "real" title element that is used by the search engines for ranking your pages. Not sure WTH people started using <meta name="title" ...>> elements. It's worthless from an SEO perspective. It might, however, be used by the theme... not sure. Perhaps it's came about because people who don't know better are always calling <title> a meta tag which it absolutely IS NOT. If it doesn't start with "<meta " then it's not a meta tag/meta element.

Meta elements are unique in that you can make up all the different types of meta elements you want and browsers/indexers will ignore them. For example <meta name="foo" ...> is a valid meta element. So is <meta name="foo1" ...>, <meta name="foo2" ...>, <meta name="MakeUpYourOwnMeta" ...>, etc.

So if you're going to get rid of one, get rid of the meta title (<meta name="title" ...>) and leave the "real" <title> element. The <meta name="title" ...> element has absolutely NO affect on your SEO.

Yes, I know SE disregard this meta title, my only concern is the negative effects on my rankings since they are identical. Anyone has an opinion on this? Thanks

    Hey,

if you go through two titles den it will effect your website ranking and also may it will considered as spam, cause dis type of approached had been used at one level, where actually that needs. So it's experiment or risk with your website, if you will go through with double title.

having meta="title" and your <title> is the ways things were designed to be.
They are the "same," but only the <title> will be displayed at the top of the page.

They were designed to have the same element. They should have the same
thing. The meta title is old fashioned and not common.

There is no penalty for having both.

Google gives greater weight to the <title> If you did not have the <title> but had
the meta title, google would not display this in the SERPs, I'm 99% sure.

I would recommend you get rid of <meta name="title" before it's too late. Your site has high chance to be considered for "Spam" activity because of those duplicated tags. Remain only <title> is enough.

I have posted this issue on other boards and everywhere I look the opinions are conflicting. Some say it may hurt some say it wont. I wish someone would give a firm, exact and tested answer. After I installed Ijoomla seo plugin, this meta title appeared. Since it is a plugin designed specifically for seo purposes, I guess they know what they are doing. Any other opinions guys? Thanks a lot
