Get a good client base. do piece work when needed, hourly when needed. $40-60 if you freelance. The industry will bear between 70-100 for companies. If you can compete as a freelance, good one ya! Also, try support packages. say $100 for 3 hours of ongoing support and troubleshooting.

Use web projects for marketing and networking.. Don't depend on them for a profit, it's hit and miss.. Long term residual income is better generated through ads on sites and affiliate marketing / sale-distribution of your own unique content.

 

The best piece of advice I can give is get plenty of practice. If you are just getting started, even if you are well educated in all coding languages, design skills probably aren't the greatest. Most clients are more attracted to a great design first, and functionality second, so do the best you can to improve your design abilities. This can only be obtained through experience. So, be patient, and keep at it. Over time you will develop your own style, and definitely start a portfolio. Your portfolio is a showcase of your capabilities, definitely a necessity.

Also, be nice to your clients, returning clients are what will put food on the table.

I'd say is make plenty of diff designs( i do web 2.0 u can do however) so u can get ur expirence up offer them to viewed as your temp portfolo and offer low prices to build your clientele.

I have done many wordpress blogs but I do not include them in my portfolio because i did not make the design decisions.
