Hey! I have a site and i'm using wordpress at the moment. Actually it's a fan site for a sports team. However, it's looking a lot like a blog, and i don't want it to look that way. Any ideas? site: www.daredevilsden.co.cc Thanks, FaNtEcH
Try to use a template featuring 3-4 columns (2-3 sidebars) and use widgets on them. You can set up category previews and other permanent stuff (well, longer lasting than regular blog posts), that should do the trick and make it less blog-like. I had something like this done to one of my blogs, and I'm currently reviewing it. If I get some other ideas I'll post here as well. Good luck with your work ! LE: I looked a little bit around your site, the template is very good for doing what you want, try to add some other text widgets with previews from articles you've written. Ex. Category - Player Profile X is a very promising young player bla bla. [read more]
I wouldn't change the theme, I think the theme is just fine and looks great. You just need a few "Tricks". First off, you want to try and have your sidebars and content an equal length. Nothing screams "BLOG" more than having a long list of posts that extend beyond the rest of the site. You may also want to remove the META widget. It says Wordpress.org right on it, and you don't need it for anything really, unless it's a membership site. In that case I would use another sign in widget (plug in) or edit that one not to include the standard Wordpress links. You could also try and add more color to your side bars, there's along set of text widgets, "Categories, Meta, Comments, and Posts", that are all the same color and make it look bland. Try braking that up with some related image ads, or custom navigation buttons...maybe even a Flickr widget or Slideshow Plug in. Another thing you could do is to edit your Comments.php file so that instead of your comments button saying "No Comments: it say's "Leave a Comment", or "What do you think?" or what ever you want to entice participation. Just a few things, hope they help.
Hey FaNtEcH Nice site! If you want to have it less blog-like i would put the posts in other page, instead of having it in the first page where users will land if they come to your site. Cheers
remove some of the sidebar widgets like the meta info and tags, these things make it look more like a blog. I personally like having these on my site though.
Nice site! I had the same problem with my site, I didn't like having the home page look more blog like. So I custom made my own home page, the link is in my signature.. Go take a look, it wasn't very hard to customize.
Maybe you should put widget with image thumbs on sidebar on which a visitor can look pictures from a latest game for example. Some lightbox system can be implemented to directly open those pics.
