Those H tags could give you positive effects as long as you do use them properly. You should put this in mind - H tag is only use to emphasize specific you wanted. Not for a long phrase / long content. If you do use them too much, then it would be harm more than help. Too much usage could make your page looking spammy and degraded in Google perspective.

 

I would use it just once per page. Don't overdo it.

Definitely. It should be the main heading for your page. But some people overuse it and find ingenious ways to incorporate it into paragraphs. I don't think that's a good idea. I use H1 in a natural way, once, maybe twice per page, and then H2, H3, H4-6.

What about just submitting an updated xml sitemap to them? That's what I do every day (when I add pages every day). Is this addurl better than sitemap?

 

I personally don't see it as H1's giving pages a 'lift'...but as H1's doing what they are supposed to do, so that a page can be shown for relevant searches....

H1 tag identifies your main subject of your page.So it should be used where the page starts.It is traditional but yes it helps in search engine ranking.
You main keyword should be present in the h1 tag to get benefit of it.
Other ways to increase your ranking is to validate your page with w3c validation service for HTML and CSS errors.
