    I'm starting to look into HTML 5. Looks promising and very interesting.

    What are your opinions on it?

    People still fighting over IE6 support matters, do you think we should consider the evolution towards HTML5 and CSS3 or rather consider focusing on old browsers and care for users that don't upgrade for one reason or another? I don't think HTML5/CSS3 and IE6 are good friends, for instance.

    correct IE8 is the only thing that supports HTML 5 in the IE evolution

    If we move towards HTML 5 it will have to be a bridge where we keep old versions and new versions.

    Once you notice 90 or higher percent on new coding that start winding down the old pages.

    Definatly cannot go straight HTML 5 for everything i dont think

    Not quite true. IE8 needs javascript help. It does not support HTML5 natively like every other far more modern browsers do.

    HTML 5 is excellent technology with CSS3 but some people does not migrate to it because IE does not support it.

    I heard somewhere that we will have to wait until 2020 until HTML 5 becomes a standard.
    Thanks IE :)

    I dont think HTML4 and CSS2 are good friends either...

    There has been a lot of talk if it will "break" the net. In my opinion, by the time it is fully functional and released as the new standard, computers running IE6 will be outdated anyway. Microsoft has been doing everything in its power to make the transition smooth. Same with Mozilla.

    A smooth transition would mean caring about those caring bout the latest version of the softeare they're using, otherwise talking HTML5 and CSS3 is a nonsese as long as we do think about the US market stick to the IE6 browser. We need to move forward. Those not willing to upgrade arn't potentially valuable to our projects, are they? If they don't spend on the win/IE upgrade, will they spend on your site?

    It depends what kind of site you are making... Maybe you want to make a really cool website only for people with HTML5...

    On the other hand if you are creating a website where you need to capture every single user, HTML5 is not the answer.

    We have other solutions for this that will allow you to do the same sort of things in a less streamlined way (flash, css3). HTML5 is fine to experiment with but we're a long ways from being able to use it the way it should be used.

    Absolutely false! Microsoft has been fighting the spec tooth and nail. Till recently, they didn't even show up for meetings even though they co-chaired the working group! About a year ago, they even came in with a long list of objections after everyone else already signed off on those topics. Only two months ago did they join the SVG working group and, of course, have sided with the proprietary video codec. Sheesh!

    Since HTML5 is backwards compatible, how would you do that?

    I don't think Microsoft understands the meaning of "smooth transition" if so they would of updated ie8 to work with html5 considering its one of the people from microsoft that is helping develop html5 you think they might make more of an effort to support it. I don't understand why every other modern browser is upping support for it except IE they have always been behind....

    If you are really wanting to use html5 and css3 without leaving anyone behind you will need to make it render differently for each browser. something like this

    <!--[if !IE]>
    	<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="not-ie.css" />
    <![endif]-->

    Code (markup):
    but it will have to have 2 different css's one for non html5 compatible browsers and the other for html5 compatable browsers so the entire source code will be different for each browsers. This would most likly be easiest and most effective in combination with php to render the pages.

    html 5 looks great, I think that it will add a lot of structure to the way we develop pages... and will likely make googlebots very happy.

    What other browsers support HTML 5?
    IE6 shouldn't be a concern since even google has dropped the support for that "wonderful" browser, and I believe that soon IE6 will not be more than an entry in wikipedia.

    All modern browsers support portions of the spec. No version of IE does (without javascript help) but IE is not a modern browser.
