When Your Site Rank Dropped From Page 1 To Page 5 - What To Do?

My site ranking for one of its main keyword is dancing like crazy. It was stable but only for around 8 months. Then it has been up and down like 2 months 1st rank then the next 2 months it was dropped to page 2, then back to 1st rank, back to page 2, and so on. But this time it becomes worse, I've been dropped to page 5 instead of page 2.

I know this might be some kind of penalty, is there any way to help me get back my rank to at least page 1? I'm actually still ranking quite well in the other keywords, only in this one...

Usually this happen when you do link building for that website. I experience this after i do link building for my website, but after sometime (2-3 weeks) my position in search result become more higher (better) than before. This could be the case with yours.

Here is what I would try in this situation:

    1. Carefully analyse the on-page SEO.
    2. Rewrite the content of the page that's not ranking as high as I think it should be.
    3. Build more backlinks from quality and somehow related websites (consider paid links).

    Good luck!

Get more profile links, If you can get more backlinks under high PR domains, that will help a lot. So, I suggest you to get more profile links.

Well if you want to be on top for longer time then consider link building for your site on regular basis. You can also do it yourself or hire some one to do this for you.

This happens if the competition is intense and you are competing with giants who have teams of SEOs for linkbuilding. What you should do is to get backlinks from High PR sites, preferably DoFollow. You will find lots of threads on digitalpoint with links to dofollow blogs, social bookmarking sites, etc. So, start linkbuilding.

That is quite common among websites so don't panic.

The best thing to do is continue to build more and more content as the engines recognize the changes to the website, also keep building more links to your website, this will help stablise those rankgs.

dont just think it is a penalty. could be google dance or could be due to some other reason. here are few things to consider:

are you keeping your content updated?
    are you building backlinks?

if you didn't update your site in a while and didn;t build backlinks for some time, then that would explain. if you are updating your site and building backlinks, then your previous ranking may not be where your site should be ranked and by now google has more info to assign a more solid ranking that your site deserves. just keep working on your site and keep building backlinks, over time your ranking should climb back up

Yeah... If it's dancing up and down then it's NOT a penalty. If it dropped 50 positions and stayed their indefinitely then that "could" be a penalty. But what you describe doesn't sound at all like a penalty.

Build back links to the page with your targeted phrase and slight variations as the link text...You don't have to change the page to keep your site "fresh"... Pages that haven't been changed in 5 years or more can hold their rankings. But it is a good idea to always be adding new content (i.e. NEW PAGES) to your site so the search engines will crawl your site more and more frequently.
