    seo = search engine optimization
    sem = search engine marketing.
    Difference between optimization and marketing you can search also in a dictionary.
    I think in most common cases sem is misaddress as seo.
    One example of sem, in my point of view, is - directory submission.
    Seo, I see it more as an onpage suite of actions.

    Just my 2 cents, if anybody thinks I`m wrong please correct me.

    SEO refers to Search Engine Optimization, This includes pushing your website higher in SERP's for your desired keywords. On Page SEO and Off Page SEO are two parts of it.
    SEM refers to Search Engine Marketing. This includes promoting your website in Search Engine either by SEO or by PPC. Thus you can say SEO is a part of SEM.

    SEO makes the organic results of SERP more stronger..SEM mainly optimize the inorganic SERP results..

    Both are done for web promotion and multi brand marketing..But both are different style of work..
    As discussed above yes it can be differentiated in the way of process we decide..

    Seo is search engine optimization and is the process you use in getting your pages to place well on search results.
    SEM is search engine marketing and involves purchasing advertising space on search result pages. Sponsored listings are SEM. Both are related though! When using Google Adwords, the better you optimize your pages for search, the less you will be paying for your selected keywords in the PPC campaign and the better placment your ads will get.
