visitors could be maximum than visits

Can anyone help me to sort out the issue
visitors could be maximum than visits? My analytics is showing
total visits 4000
5000 people visited the site for a particul day
Plz explain me

ya, visits may differ from total visitors-

Analytics measures both visits and visitors in your account. Visits represent the number of individual sessions initiated by all the visitors to your site. If a user is inactive on your site for 30 minutes or more, any future activity will be attributed to a new session. Users that leave your site and return within 30 minutes will be counted as part of the original session.

The initial session by a user during any given date range is considered to be an additional visit and an additional visitor. Any future sessions from the same user during the selected time period are counted as additional visits, but not as additional visitors.

 

Are you saying that you have more "unique visitors" than visits ?

 

How is the site engagement? Is there a good page views / visit and good average time spent?

It is possible visits span on two reporting days, they are not counted on the next day as their visit started the previous day. They are still counted as unique visitors for the particular day.

 

Visits are based on cookies, whereas unique visitors typically are not. I think unless you could track unique individuals (only possible with something like Omniture and a login on a site), visitors are worthless. Visits are the way to go. Check out blogs.omniture.com for more info.
