I think the thread is completely about PR so what for we are talking about contents and domain age?? PR is nothing to do with contents. The more quality backlinks you get the more PR your website will attain. Zero external backlinks is not the solution to get higher page rank..
Squidoo I think is a great source of quality back link. Make some quality lens with a link to your site and promote the lens.
I agree with most of the people who have commented here, backlinks are important only if you are aiming for a PR4 and above for your website. I have lot of blogs and website of a particular niche. Believe me in my niche a PR2 is also like a PR4 or PR5 in normal niches. But still if i have to aim for PR4 and above I need to have good and valuable backlinks. The higher pagerank backlinks, the better ....
If you've got a good website you certainly can. I've never done any link building and my website is already PR2 (4 months old). Why? Because people come on my site, like what they see and post a link on their blog or on a forum they are a member on to share my site. Due to this I now have (according to Alexa) 51 backlinks all of which are relevant to my site which haven't cost me a penny or a single minute of my time. Google can see that all my backlinks are genuine and I haven't payed out to improve my ranking and they reward me for that. So my advice is focus on content and quality baclinks should come naturally.
Yes off course you can get the PR without having a single backlinks, It's one of the aspect of the PR not only aspect for PR , Awesome article and other imp. aspects can also lead to better PR.
Lets put this simple. With no backlinks, you will earn no PageRank. Backlinks are a sign of your websites popularity and relevance. Without them, you will earn no PR.

content is king. i woulmd say , if you have sititors and they are linking from there blog you don't do a thing but you get traffic and pr rank.

Yes, but that means you have backlinks already. Visitors are coming from search engine. If you haven`t any backlinks you don`t get index in search engines, so 0 visitors.
