How long does it take for SEO to work?

In your experience how long does it take for SEO to work. For example, if you posted 20 links to a website how long would it take before the links had a beneficial effect in Google's Search Engine? Also, if you made 10 new original, well written pages for a website, how long would it take for those to do the same?

This depends on your competition. Try optimizing for the keyword ljkjhf09809283402jlknlhlkgfkfkfvm0jnln and you will be #1 as soon as your page is cached (i.e. minutes, and it's free: try searching for ljkjhf09809283402jlknlhlkgfkfkfvm0jnln right now and see what comes up). Try optimizing for "viagra" or "sex" and it will probably take years and millions of dollars (I am not kidding) for you to come close to page 1.

if you dont much care about your server resource. use google webmaster tool, and in the site configuration, change the crawler rate to the fastest 0.5 request/sec, and 2 sec between request. this setting will increase Googlebot traffic on your server. and im sure you page that allowing googlebot to crawl will be indexed soon, but im not sure how fast google will indexed the page.

Point taken. It would be hard to get top spot for viagra (tee hee) and sex is nothing I care to write about unless for my comedy sites and they do pretty well - a back door method (tee hee hee). How about a keyword with 1-3 millions SE results?

What matters is not the number of results returned for a keyword, but the number of sites really competing and optimizing for it. Even if a mere 10 sites are targeting the keyword, you've got some serious competition. Enter your keywords and analyze the backlink profiles of the results on page one (you can use Yahoo site explorer, but filter out the links from the same domain). This will give you a ballpark idea of how many backlinks (hopefully with correct anchor text!) you need to appear on page 1.

    buddy it depends!
you can not say any thing about SEO in your words, i mean it could take months or just few days may be hours
all it depends is does your main site have good PR, i mean to say if a PR 9 site generates a new page it would be indexed in minutes and if in other case PR 0 site generate it may be months or weeks to get indexed.

i hoe this is the answer of your question.

You just opened my eyes, thanks. Now everything make sense. More respected site (high PR) get regular visits from google than lower PR site. Thanks again.

One of my sites is top of a search that returns over 200,000,000 search results with hardly any work, it depends how competitive a word is.

Thanks it does answer my question to some extent. There is a problem though (based on my limited experience). The keyword I am really interested in and the site I built relating to it return my blogger.com site (less than 6 weeks old) fluctuating between page 1 or 2 of Google SERs. It normally ranks better than articles I've published (with links to the blog) on 2 PR5 article publishing sites. Also, an article on a PR2 article publishing site sometimes does better than all. What I'd really like to know is: How have I managed to get my site to page 1 or 2 of Google SERs so quickly - it first appeared on page 1 within 2 weeks after publishing...

Actually, this doesnt work overnight, this really takes time and you have to do it right especially if you have a tough competition. If you want to get results, it is best to keep posting everyday. Keep spreading articles with a backlink to your site. But come up with unique, original and catchy articles for readers to be interested in reading and clicking your link.

There is no solid answer to this question, but the more SEO work you do, for a longer amount of time, the more it pays off.

Well I believe this is both an art and a science, but more of an art. I can give you no definite quantities, but remember not to build links to quickly. (If that's even an option)

all the new comers are so much excited about their sites and always try to make new backlinks, in case of yours you might had have some comment or article published on the main page of
    the site, let me illustrate,

some article publishing sites publish there recently published article as spot light, it remain there as long as another article is published, the time may be seconds or minutes, but if it does happened then you got a pr 5 direct backlink for some time which may lead to dominance on google or any comment on main page/homepage published with dofollow function can do miracles.

i hope this is the answer of your question

It depends on your niche how effective your level of SEO will be, it also depends entirely on the links you build, basically it depends how good you are at SEO and how weak your market is.
