Suggestion Why is digitalpoint full of spam?

I see spam all over the place. Why is no one nuking them? How come threads started by spammers are still here 30+ days after they were started? Is no one moderating this forum?

Have you ever managed a forum? Do your bit and report the posts.

    Thanks Brian

Yes, I do report - and yes I co-own 2 forums where one of them is quite busy. I was just wondering why spam could survive so long in such a large forum. Maybe it would be an idea to automatically nuke a post/thread if more than 2/3 established members flags them or something like that - or maybe that is already in effect.

I must agree there is a lot of spam going around again :( but its the same on most large forums, I help run another well known SEO related forum and we get spam each and every day.

There is no sure way to stop it (apart from making a forum paid) so all you can do is help the mods and admins by reporting the spam and try your best not to reply to spam threads/posts/comments as it may get more people talking meaning mods may thing the thread is now wanted to be left by members.

Oh why we on this topic where do I apply to become a mod here? I have loads of experience in running forums and sites so I'm sure you guys will like me on board :)

You answered your own question -- it's a very large forum. Therefore spam will happen, and it's not possible for the mod team to look at every section every day. We rely on reports from members to identify problem posts, and sometimes it takes a while to get through that list.

SystemOAD -- Asking to become a mod is usually the surest way of not becoming one. As for the process, if you do a quick search it's been answered quite a few times.

Generally there are 3 ways forums hire mods

Don't call us; We'll call you.
Open call for help (ie. announcement)
Don't call us; We'll call you.

Just to add to this, if the moderators gave out more reputation for people who flagged spam posts for doing a good job then more people would do it. I must of flagged 100 spam posts and I've received green rep in return from one mod in that time.

As I said in another thread here recently, mods are limited in how many reps we can give just like everyone else. It would be physically impossible then for us to give everyone reps, given how many reports there are. We are allowed to reserve reps for whatever posts we want just like any other member can. Taking pride in your community doesn't need a pat on the back all the time. People do occasionally get rep for reports when they've made a particular good catch -- for example catching a difficult duplicate account we can verify. It's not going to happen for all, or even most, reports. And frankly if that's the reason people are making them, then they're not making them for the right reasons anyway. I'd also worry incentivizing reports would lead to more garbage ones, and therefore more whining in this section when we don't act on the bogus reports. And remember... asking for rep is considered rep abuse. I would say reporting solely or mostly to get rep is on par with that. Rep is meant to be given mostly for your posting and interaction with other members of the community.

Okay thanks for the reply, I didn't realize the limit was also in place on mods. Don't get me wrong I don't report posts as an incentive to receive positive reputation, as I said above 1 positive reputation in 4 years for reporting bad posts yet I still have 4 green bars so I must be helping out the community as well. I don't mean to complain just trying to make it easier for you guys.

You've reported two posts... that's hardly "full of spam" is it?

All the mods process the report queue differently but if you put the word "spam" in the report box I'll find those reports more quickly.

It's funny how new member always have something to complain about. You have been here since 2007 and have fewer then 30 posts - this is the best way you can contribute to the forum? Awesome... can't wait for more posts.

Far as fighting spam, aside from reporting it, I'd suggest red-repping the spammer. Hard to get business with a red rep, and if you red rep them for spamming and TELL them it's for spamming, even the slow ones may figure out how that relationship works.

Even non-mods can effect the outcome that way... use it to make a difference.

I report post if I see it is spam, but so far I not report anything. DP to me quite good and useful info with no spam.
