Extension has nothing to do with SEO. SEO is what you do to
a website. Websites get SEO'd, not domains.

There are more dot coms that rank, because, well, there are
more dot coms. Only makes sense. People think this alone means
    dot infos don't rank well.

As my favorite example, do any search for google page rank, PR checker,
page rank, etc. and prchecker.info owns the niche. And when I say
owns the niche, I mean owns the niche. It has a PR7, not too shabby and
ranks #1 for just about any combination of PR page rank you can come
up with. In fact, many times it gets one of those double listings. There
is no dot com that is even close. Even google's own site comes up #2.

But you will get many "I feel...." opinions, only because people think
"I feel..." is a viable way to do SEO.

Matt Cutts talks about this in one of his recent videos, Google treats all domain extensions the exact same whether it's a .info, .org, .net, .edu, or .gov.

Theoretically, there is no difference. But, IMO in the real world there is a huge difference. Everyone knows and remembers .com. Word of mouth, social networking, are very important and .info doesn't get much attention in those circles. I think it has gained the reputation of being a cheap knock-off that is usually built for AdSense.

So real world, I don't think .info works very well. There may be some that are successful, but generally I rather have a long .com URL than a short .info.

When a .info domain is talked about, a chubby image of domain appears in my mind :D

So better to go with .com domain.

Ofcourse not, SEO is completely different than the domain extension. Please do not get jumbled up by this mixture. Have a proper plan for your SEO no matter what your domain extension is, you will rank higher in all search engines.

I stuck two similar site on the the web and the .com site was indexed far quicker than the .info site... Also the number of pages indexed at any one time is always more on the .com site..

.info domains have issues because they're so cheap to register. Like people have said, basically the extension doesn't / shouldn't matter, but when you can register a .info for 89 cents it becomes associated with spam.

check out this SEO book post: seobook.com/google-temporarily-purges-info-domain-names

matt cutt's 2008 predictions, "A top-level domain (TLD registry) will offer domains for under $4. The result will be another TLD blighted by spammy domain registrations."

so imo, .info domains can rank just fine, but there is still at least a potential issue to a .info, or any TLD, that offers such cheap domains.

Well as you can see this is a topic that is up for discussion. It is something that has been debated for years now. I'm not personally sure if it's harder to get a .info domain up in the asearch engines than a .com or .net - but me personally - if I'm going to put the time into a site I go with a .com or .net just in case.

I think people respect .com and .net and .org a lot more than the other extensions such as .info - so that is another reason I stick with .com or .net (.org are good in my eyes too).

there are mixed replies as to whether other domains get indexed slower/don't perform as well, etc. as .com.
but i don't really think that matters as much if the content is optimized.
HOWEVER, the most important thing IMHO is that if you have a fully optimized .info site...the problem is, you're still sending traffic to .com b/c that's what people remember.
they remember your website name and automatically attach ".com" to it.
so you can have the greatest SEO'd website but you're still giving a lot of your traffic to .com.
conclusion: if you can, stick to .com

.info domains just look cheap. I have never seen a quality site with a .info domain and when I am looking through search results on Google I rarely if ever would click on a .info result. The reason is simple, I have never seen a good .info site they are ALWAYS junk sites.

So I would never put a website on a .info domain I wouldn't want to associate myself with that garbage.

stephen u r right, SEO has no relation with domain extension if u find keyword rich domain with any extension by that. But ur 1st pref. should be .com as that is easy to remember and by default non experience user enter that.

For SEO it isn't supposed to matter, but it will affect your overall traffic (especially return traffic.)

In my experience, .com has always ranked better than .info

and I have stopped buying .info domain names altogether unless

I know that I can provide a huge number of backlinks to the domain.

.com or .info makes no different for search engines - the choice is yours. Although if you are thinking about domain with regional extention like in example .co.uk or .fr there is a difference than using .com - I would rather decide on that kind of domain than more broad one (like .com).

Officially, Search Engines, including Google, exhibit unbiased approach to URL extensions. So the answer to your question is a firm 'No'.
Just make your site potentially useful, informative and unique for your visitors, and things will be ok.
