for some reason recently when ive been posting blog comments after i hit submit the next page is just blank something in the address bar like wp-comment-post or something but no confirmation or anything?
The best way to get backlink is blog posting and to leave comments on forums and blogs with your website link.
The "old methods" for getting do-follow backlinks are still working for me I don't think there are many new methods if any at all. It's still forums, blogs, social sites, paid in-content links, etc.
I'll say that article marketing and video creation are perhaps the two best options available. A great job on either one seems to be the easiest way (to me at least) of having something go viral without a ton of effort.

Try to write for high pr blogs/web sites and place some backlink on the resource section.. also overtime you will be able to write about your own product or service in those blogs/web sites after you win trust. Thats how most high level promotion/seo/backlinking is done.
