    Yes social networking sites are useful for promoting site. In social networking sites you have to invite peoples to join you and your groups as well as your fan pages. It is very easy to use social networking sites. Do also social bookmarking for promoting your site. It is also very helpful.

    why you are using hi5, while you can use facebook or twitter, so my suggestion is to use twitter or facebook, where you will find more enough scope to optimize your site or blog.
