I was just quoted 5-6hrs to SEO a wordpress blog... Is this amount of time not realistic? This seems like way too much time to SEO a blog..

    Just curious.

    Thanks!

SEO work for any website needs time to make strategy and find good links. If you just need to do submissions then 2 hrs are more than enough. :)

Depends on what's included in his 'seo services'

Is he doing key phrase analysis on your niche for you, helping you find the best 20 or so key phrases to optimize on?
Is he going to create a page for each key prhase to optimize for that key prhase?
Is he going to rename images, and add alt text to all images?
Is he going to make sure that each page has unique titles and only one URL to get to the page?
Is he gong to make sure that your targetted key phrases are on each page the appropraite amount of times, giving you a 5-7% key phrase density?
Is he going to make sure that each page has one and only one h1 tag, and that that h1 tag has the desired key prhase in it?
Is he going to provide one way backlinks from do follow, hoigh quality, relevant pages with strong PR and low outbound links?
Is he going to set up your internal link structure to sculpt your page rank to provide pages with the most competition the most link juice?

SEO can easily take 6 hours for a blog. It depends on what he's going to provide in the 6 hours that matters.

That's reasonable enough for Onpage SEO.
like, finding proper keyword group, Template Edits, installation of plugins.. There's many more.

Sounds about right. My fiance did the SEO work on my blog and it took him quite a bit of time. And, he still works on it when needed.

6 hours for seo for wordpress blog is normal, in fact I would have expected lot more hours for seo. It also depends on what kind of services he is going to provide within these 6 hours.

Eh, well including doing some keyword research at the same time this should take about an hour unless your site is huge or something.

    hope that helps,

    Lol, fair point.

I assumed that the business owner was female, and that she was hiring male laborers. :)

how long it takes may not be important to this type of work. all depends on what you are achieving. i c so called SEO people form India charging as low as $3/hour for SEO work. so at that rate, you are looking to spend only $15 - $18 for the SEO job :) on the other hand, an established and reputable SEO company may charge flat rate and quote you hundreds for the same job.

for basic blog SEO, you dont even need to hire anyone. do a little research on blog seo and do it yourself. if you are running wordpress blog for example, search for wordpress seo and you will find lot of resources. just follow though.

there is "all in one seo" plugin for wordpress which does some basic seo for your wordpress blog. use that. also change the permalink structure to custom permalink and put %postname% on the custom field. with the all in one seo plugin and custom permalink setup, you are done with wordpress SEO pretty much.

Quite reasonable depending on what all will be done...can often take more time than that, again depending on what all will be done. You have to realize that you want the job done thoroughly and right and it's worth paying to have it done so.

I can spend 20 hours doing SEO on a single site and still not be where we want site to be. 5-6 hours to kickstart the blog is reasonable.

As mentioned above, it is all about the scope of work and you are wise to ask questions before you hire anyone to make sure you get the best value.

It's reasonable to get some things in motion, but I agree with Hooper in that I spend a lot more time optimizing, testing, then reoptimizing...that takes hours and hours.

This is such a broad topic that determining the amount of time needed is almost impossible.

    1) How many posts/pages are on the blog?
    2) What keywords are you targeting?
    3) What is your current placement?
    etc..
    etc..

All of these things combine to form the time needed. In reality, a one time 5-6 hour period is really not enough to optimize any site for SEO. Effective SEO is an ongoing process and should have 5-6 hours+ devoted to it per month.

I hope this information helps. :)

It really depends which niche you're in and how competetive that market is. Are you aiming to beat out the competition or are you happy with a sour taste in your mouth at #9 or worse, deeper pages? There are so many factors that you'll need to provide us before we can give you a verdict on that quote. It's not unrealistic though, SEO isn't a game, It's going to be the difference between ROI and a loss - real SEO work does take hours of planning, care and attention and is also an on-going process which most people seem to forget.

It depends on what they are doing for the money, if your blog is big and they are going in and tweaking hundreds of post titles then it could take a long-time. Also, SEO is an ongoing commitment, doing it once will not reap all the rewards possible.
