Why is everyone setting up Autoblogs ?

I won't go into my personal and professional feelings about autoblogging, but I would like to hear from those that do them if they actually do anything for you.
It seems like such a waste of energy to build something online that is neither original or beneficial.

Just curious...2 years ago this forum was about creating websites with Wordpress, Design Techniques and New Themes, SEO practices, Troubleshooting problems and so on, and today, it seems every 3rd post is someone trying to set up an autoblog.

Is anyone really making any money with an autoblog?
I know the idea was hot 3 years ago for the first few people that figured out how to do it...and then they sold the technique to a few thousand other people after they drained everything out of it, but isn't it just saturated and overdone at this point?

I mean, if everyone is doing the exact same thing, what makes others keep following ?

Why is everyone selling links on dropped domains and shitty websites? For the same reason. To make money. There are newbies who will buy them because they don't know any better.

I posted a WTB link sales thread the other day. Must have received at least 60 PM's. Not one of them was a quality site. They were all setup to sell links. It's laughable really.

I'm just wondering if any of them are successful. Are they really worth the effort, I mean can you pay any bills from an autoblog ?
There has to be some benefit, or are people just following old technology and dated tricks because they don't know any better and have no real direction online?

If anyone makes any money from an autoblog, I don't need to know how much, I just want to see the blog.

Easy money. People dont want to put effort. I tried an autoblog sometime back. Small and steady income. But In the end I felt this is not blogging. So I stopped that blog. I hav pledged not to do any autoblog.

I cannot say it's saturated. There is variety of content available and till that's available it'll never saturate.

What do you mean, there is a variety of content available ? Are there services of some sort that supply autoblog content ?
I thought this was done by scraping RSS feeds from other sites ?

If so, that's not "Available Content" it's scraping. and if that is the case, then the content is already published, so I don't understand how it's not a saturated idea.

Certain sites like Headline Agrregators that pull from different sources of a particular niche to gather them all in one place I can understand, but I don't see how posting other people's excerpts of already published articles has any benefit SEO or traffic wise.

Personally, I know of at least 3-5 sites (probably more) that scrape my feed and they are all crap sites. One is an illegal music download site ( which really ticks me off), but it doesn't really bother me, because they aren't offering any content..they are sniffing my butt because they don't have the skills or talent to do it themselves and I make sure that I make mention of that in my blog posts every now and then.

The only ones that really bother me are the one's that change the name of t he original author and pass the content off as theirs. That's just stealing and it can't make them any real money. If I'm going to be a dishonest bastard that other webmasters want to kick my ass, I'm at least going to make some real money from it, not this adsense peanuts that they all seem to be chasing.

I'll tell you who I see making the real money in autoblogging, the people selling the plug ins. They are smart enough to know that you can sell people the illusion of an easy way to make money. I look at some of the sales pages for some of these plug ins and they are laid out just like any TV weight loss pill..all the right words that you want to believe, and happy 'testimonials' of people making 'easy money'.
    What a joke.
Maybe I'm wrong. That's why I'm posting this, to understand the lure and if it is actually a real way to make money.

OK, someone was nice enough to send me an example of a functioning autoblog that is successful and I am starting to understand the concept a little better. I'm still not a big fan, and will still never own one, but now I'm seeing the lure and I can see how maybe setting up multiple sites...although technically it's still spam garbage..may cause some clicks.

It's certainly not going to do as well as having a quality blog or website, it's pretty much just a reinvention of the original spam blog, but now that I actually looked at an example, I can say for sure that there are thousands of these out there...They are everywhere.

But no soapbox here, we all make out money in different ways, but at least now I understand a little better why so many people are attracted to building them.
I'm gonna go turn off my RSS feeds now.

Very nicely done and well said. I appreciate you chiming in. Just like anything, in the wrong hands anything can be turned into something negative, I mean who isn't guilty of a little automation.
Amazing that we do actually agree on the basic principle, no matter how may tools, scripts and "tricks" you use, you still need to put the work in to succeed.

Thanks for your input, it is much appreciated. I don't even mind that you plugged your product along with it :). Hey, business is business.

I haven't seen any evidence that there is anything easy about it, just that you aren't writing any content. There is nothing easy about making money online, I don't care how many scripts you use.
If all you do is just build it, they will not come, I don't care what it is.

I see both the good and bad to auto blogging. I ahve tried a bit of it myself on a single blog for content in the site relevant to the sites content and what the site was about. Then came the DMCA orders or provide a source link. So I began providing source links and partial content from posts. Still raised a great deal of traffic, and comments making the blog even more powerful and a good source for information.

But lets put this into a bit of perspective. A great auto blog.
Those looking to make a decent income from auto blogs normally would have to make at least 100 blogs. (different niches normally)

buy .info domains (100 at 5.00-10.00 each thats 500-1000.00)
say they spring for .coms (100 at 10.00-20.00 1000-2000.00)

grab your rss feeds and plugins for wordpress

take the time to setup 100 blogs with the plugin, and the rss feeds needed for that blog.

best to have them on their own c-class ip's specially if you link them from one another to help link juice, and back links. mine as well get the most out of it.

Then things are running 100% on they're own.
but you are still looking on a low $500.00 and a high $2,000.00

This is if you use all free plugins, layout themes, and rss feeds. Forgot to mention the host which you might want to pick up a decent host if you plan to do a separate c-class ip for each one. (75-250.00/mo.)

load it up with adsense in posts 200x200, top header 468x60 or 468x90 and bottom footer if you like or side bar 400x120 or 600x120

There is a plus and minus to everything.
and still costs money to make money regardless if its the domain and hosting, or purchasing premium software. Its good in ones hands while harmful in another person's hands.

    Pros
Worth it in the long run.
    Set and forget
Done correctly can add value as aggregating content

    Cons
Expensive to maintain (domain and hosting costs)
Need to do 10s of blogs to make it worthwhile in any niche
    Suseptible to Search Engine changes
If done incorrectly can look artificial and spammy

While i dont like the idea of auto blogs, i think that what has contributed to the surge of them over the last couple of years is those get rich quick and so called money making blogs that promote fantasy types of marketing that i thought even the most naive of people could see through by now, but clearly not.

Im aware of a wave of new types of webmasters in some parts of the world that are sadly coming online with a lot of misinformation, they are being lead by the wrong type of people.

One born every minute comes to mind, and im referring to both autoblogs and that certain kind of person.

Now that's what i always thought about this. I see people stressing about setting up one autoblog and I was always under the impression that one...even if you did get something from it, wouldn't make you enough to pay a bar tab.
I have been saying that for over a year now. A lot of new webmasters from outside of the U.S., are putting their all their eggs on 5-10 year old information that has been over and done with for years, or has never proven to be worth the long sales page it's written on.

One thing that you can count on in the business of the WWW, is that people don't share (or sell) money making secrets, until after they have drained the system for everything it's worth and it's no longer viable. Others make money on selling YOU the dream, but never actually put a plan into action and seen profitable results.

Sure, they can post up profits or show tangible things , but it's mostly from selling people like you 'The System'.

It's the age old mail scam.."Send me $5 and I'll show you how to make a million dollars" and then after you send the $5 the information is, "Put an ad in newspapaers that say' send me $5 and i'll show you how to make a million dollars'."

I agree hmansfield, they milk it first (when they have something that does work) then sell on the idea once its over.

What ive always said to people is that if anyone has an idea that can make them a certain amount every week or month then theres no way that they are going to want to share that idea, at least not while its working for them.

The people falling for those tricks dont seem to stop and consider that if mr dollars can make (insert insane income amount here) then they are not going to be interested in trying to sell a so called secret for $5, $10, $15 or $20 a time.

Its funny how they are "selling secrets" too, lol, obviously no longer a secret once its shared :)

    Keywords will always develop

There are millions of long tailed keywords

You can rank high in google on those keywords

You will get traffic to those sites ranked high on google PLUS other organic traffic

If you aggregate content, thats diffuse thats a legitimate service to a casual browser

If there is adsense targeted to the same services then that's legitimate.

If you scale it up to a number of sites, you can sell or add products or do a 1000 things with them

The plug in sites are just that PLUG INs, - software and tools to develop multiple sites faster.

    long term virtual real estate..

How is that equivalent to an age old mail scam of putting 5$ ads in a newspaper?

All autoblogs are not useless. News andor content aggregates on unique or obscure topics often save web researchers time and effort by pulling multiple resources into one place. Those kinds of blogs, when compiled by honest bloggers, always point to the original sources of the content and give credit.

I have found these kinds of blogs useful in my own experience, and that is the reason why I began creating them. I am still new to it, but it can be reasonably profitable and useful, depending on the time, thought, and effort put into creating something valuable to a particular audience.
