Is there anything out there that can compete with magentocommerce on price and functionality?

Given its free I would have to say no, not really a better solution available for free. I do however use prestashop from time to time. It's very fast, lightweight, easy to design and easy to use.

Cube Cart, OS Commerce and Zen Cart have also a good market. These are also open source ecommerce management systems.
