Going rate for a PHP developer?

Discussion in 'PHP' started by Rory M, Feb 27, 2010.

    Hi All,

What do you reckon is the going rate for a PHP developer? And how do they charge - by the hour, by the project?

    Cheers

lowest I've seen was the 5/hr guy on here the other day. oDesk looks to average around 15-20. While most freelancers charge closer to 40/hr. So its really dependent on location, experience and I'd guess local demand. Project rates are crazy unless the client has a limit on the number of free revisions. I only do hourly work with discounts for people with over X/hours a week of work.

Usually when your doing freelancing through one of those freelance sites, you charge per project (theres equation to figure out how many hours for a project, cant remember it right now.. it takes the amount of hours it probably would take, the amount of hours if something goes wrong, and the best case hours)

Would say 40-50/hr for most (professional) freelancers.

This depends on your experience and skill level, and the quality of work you'll be able to provide. I generally charge per project unless there is a requirement to track and work on a hourly basis.
    Thanks :)

So how do you guys work it out then, just estimate how long it's going to take you to do it and give the person a quote beforehand? Thanks for all these replies btw, I think I may have to hit the cheap end of the market as I'm by no means brilliant (sssssh, you never saw that) :D

It all depends on the type of work.. usually i never do jobs under $25 unless it´s a 2-5min job...

Basic jobs: $25-35/hour (This is low since I'm in Sweden.. Normal Swedish webdevelopment rate is from $100/hour to somewhere around $300/hour.) impossible to get jobs at that rate though
Add extra stuff like custom .txt parsing and similar stuff the rate goes up.

Depending on competence and experience, you'd see anything between $5 / hour and $200 / hour. Most of the PHP developers competent for common jobs in US should charge around $20 - $50 / hour.
