Frankly if we're reacting to an article originally published in 2007, we're all in for a rude surprise because that information is incredibly out of date. According to Google backlinks and content run hand in hand, but it does appear that Bing is moving more toward the Google backlink model which means Google is probably continuing their focus on links.

You have to assume that google will use everything on your site to figure out where you should rank. If your keyword doesnt appear on your page much, then google can conclude that your site is not relevant to that keyword , therefore you wont rank. As for links, they take content seriously. You can stuff your keyword all you want, but google is going to analyze all the content around your hyperlink to see what its about, and if your site will help googles users with information they need.

Basically just try and get as many incoming links as you can. Its lots of hard work but can be worth it.

Got a news last month from various seo experts that google is giving more value to brands and authority sites. Not sure about it. Lets wait and see.
New google algorithm follows page speed now,it's introduced for the first time in the google algorithm.But back links from quality & reputed sites still have good values in google.
