Do I need a designer "and" a programmer?

Hi All,

I want to get a couple of sites made because I don't have the smarts to do it myself.
Do I just get a designer to do it and whack it all up and get going, or do I need a designer to make the site look good and then a programmer to get it all going?

It depends what you want for your website. If it's just basic html and css, then just get a designer, but if you are looking for something that requires a database for member login or something that needs to store data, then you will need someone who can do server side scripting.

Ok, I think I'm going to just need a designer, it's all pretty basic except for one page which will be our logo portfolio and I was hoping to have past work samples on it where when you scroll over the pictures magnify (pop out type thing) ... will this require a programmer or is it a basic tool most designers can get a hold of?

That can be done with javascript which is really not that hard.

I love this question because many people claim they do both. I am a programmer so I usually use templates to start from for graphics work or outsource it. They are two opposite sides of the brain (analytical versus visually creative).

What does your site need more of, best graphics ever, or strong functionality...you can always get people to create a PSD for you that your programmer can chop it up. It would be difficult to get a designer that can do programming.

 

I have to agree with itliberty on this. The people who are able to do both will be weak on one of the sides.

 

It"s also my experience that good designers have very poor programming skills, and vice-versa. It's also very understandable.

So an option is to purchase temp off tempmonster or similar and get programmer to strip it out and fill with my content etc?

 

Your better off with a freelancer who will do both for you.

wait hold on... before you go to a freelancer.. give yourself a favor (and the freelancer for that matter) and make sure you completely understand what it is exactly that your trying to accomplish.. The fact that you dont even know WHO to hire , implies that you're uncertain of your site's goals.

 

a good programmer will help you more in both design and programming aspects.. i am willing to do both design and programming part for you.
