PHPLd alternatives

    Hey everyone!!!

    I am seeking some advice here...

    I've been using PHPLd for several years now and recently it's been causing some issues with my hosting for overloading the MySQL servers.

    So I promised the admin guy I'll look into alternatives secretly thinking to myself I'll revert to DP where I'll get advice.

    Now this is what I'm after:

    * An easy to skin/modify script
    * open source
    * Adsense compatible (I am making a fair bit with my current layout)
    * Server friendly
    * Ability to export from PHPLd would be nice.. but not a must....
    * Ability to add featured links for $$
    * Has Captcha verification
    * User friendly

    The current directory I have is over at http://www.thewebmasterstool.com/directory/ so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks guys :)

    Can we get a bit more info? How many categories and links do you have in your database? Who is your host and what kind of plan are you on? How much traffic do you get daily?

    And I doubt the script is the problem. PhpLD is used by literally tens of thousands of websites on the web, many of them quite large. The most likely problem is your host.

    Well to be frank I don't think the host is that great.. but I'm under a lot spam attack too....

    By phpld database is 40MB in size which is big considering all my others are under 3 MB.

    I have 31,331 links and 700 categories.

    I am getting around 750 hits a day on it...

    I am on a free plan.. but I can swear by the company. They are extremely good.

    Thing is, I know it's my SQL which is causing the problem.. and I was suspecting it either being the forum or the directory... but after looking at the forum I'm not too sure if the directory is to blame. but still.. it's worth looking into I would say :S

    Hosting is defintely your problem. Changing scripts won't solve anything. Your database size (even at 40mb) is really not that big. And 30K links isn't approaching the numbers I've seen people test phpLD with (seen it tested with 1 million plus).

    You need to lose the free host. A free host just isn't going allocate enough resources to run even a basic site like yours. You can get decent hosting for really cheap nowadays. I would go over to the phpld forums and ask them for hosting recommendations.

    I am sure there are alternatives to phpld but it IS used by MANY sites as EveryQuery said. Many HT directories run on that script so I too believe that your issue is related to something else ...

    if you have a look at info.vilesilencer.com/top it will show you a list of some of the best SEO directories and next to each one it will tell you what software it uses. That way you can get live demos...

    Sounds like thats your problem and not related to any script that your running.

    That old chestnut that some hosts come out with..... i read it so often.

    You can get some shared hosting very very cheaply.

    I overlooked that free plan part. I am convinced that most "free hosts" do so poorly on security that over half of the sites that they host get iframe badware injected ...

    I doubt the alternatives will help as they are mostly running on MySQL and PHP, I seriously do not feel that they will be lighter on the server. As the rest mentioned, the real issue is the resources provided by the free host. Try getting a cheap paid host, I think you won't be facing the issues.

    The makers of this script have a website...where you bought the script...said website has a support forum. So why aren't you asking this to them?

    I am starting to think it's the hosting.

    But thank you for all you're comments.

    I have tried eSyndicate before and I liked it, except it's importing ability from phpLD isn't that good :S

    but thanks all :)

    I agree.

    No need to use them either when shared hosting is so cheap.

    Yea...that script appears to be dead. No support or upgrades to be found. Your best bet is to change to one of the more popular scripts like phpLD or esyndicat. Both of those companies offer a superior product and actually support their products.

    Yes...you should. This thread was not started for you to ask help for installing your directory script. You should start your own thread next time rather than hijacking someone else's thread. Basic forum etiquette.
