I come from no-english country,so I got comfused with it,many people use "free" in their website keyword but when you actually visit their site you found that everything need payment! does the word "free" have many meanings not only mean zero payment or they liking using such lying ways to promote their product?:D
for example :Can I understand "Free book" as "liberal book" or "open-minded book"

No, it's just a daft and short-sighted technique to get people to the site who are hoping to get something for nothing.

In an adwords campaign, 'free' is usually the first word you put in your negative list, because if you're selling something, you don't want to pay for clicks from people who aren't prepared to pay.

lot of people push CPA offers for free giveaways. for example, free plasma offer, free baby diapers, etc. if you look into a CPA network then you will see offers like this are in plenty. people who push these types of offers and do seo, they will need to use the word free (not that anyone gets any free things, or maybe one in a million but those offers are there). if you search for domain with the word free, you will see there is a domain for all things with the keyword free and LOT of people search like that

"Free" is used to boost ranking on google. For example "free TV".

Free is the word so widely used with actually giving anything for free. When you search for free wordpress themes on google, most of the site that you get has all paid themes on them. This is funny.

It also works pretty good to attract CTR from the Serps specially on e-commerce sites that offer Free Shipping.

People loves free (without paying money) term. Any marketers knows this fact and use it all time.
In fact there is no free items or service in this world. Even using Google for searching is not free, think about it.

as an example of my own promotion, some time I do use free.. with condition.. like the sponsorship on my website, you get free if you place an icon with link back to my site.. a lot of marketers do it the same way. the free comes with string attached.. perfectly ethical.. like free ebook for email subscription... what is wrong with that?

No, it is most certainly not "daft and short-sighted", magda. I rank #2 on Google for a competitive term that includes "free" in the title. The reason I put "free" in there is because everything on the website is free. It's a nonprofit site (sig link #2), and the word "free" aptly describes the contents.

now we are talking about free.. I would like to introduce another concept: freemium, that is free+premium.. you use free to build traffic and then up sell for profit.. craigslist is a fine example

Free in most instances online means that I will trade you your email address for the information. It's as simple as that. Free means you give me your email address so I can market to you later.

No, of course, if you are offering free things, it's useful and accurate - I was referring to the first poster's confusion - wondering if the word meant something different in this context, because she sees if in connection with sites that offer nothing free - in that case it can only serve to ensure you have a very high bounce-rate, surely.

The word "free" can be used in a lot of different ways. Some of them might be related and some might just be used to attract traffic. If someone is giving away a bonus product, "free" keyword can still be used although the main product is not free.
