    Well is it?

Many argue yes, others argue no.
(DMOZ I would say still worth submitting)

All of these new directories popping up are a waste of my time.

    This is my opinion only

    Lets vote.

What most people don't understand about directories is that Google treats them like any other site on the internet. If it is a good resource that adds value to the web then it will rank in Google and also pass good link juice to the sites listed in it. If it is simply a spam site with a bunch of crappy links in it then Google will treat it as a spam site and won't index it or pass link juice from it.

If you spend your time finding good quality directories it will be worth your time. If you're just submitting to thousands of spam directories then it'll almost be a waste of time...it'll be more like buying lottery tickets. Most will be worthless, but once in a while some will pay off.

A lot of the new ones that pop up daily are a waste of time as the owners could`nt care less about what they accept they are just after a quick buck

But there are many that are well worth submitting to and are run by people who actually care about their directories.

I run a free web directory and i reject 75% of submissions because i care about quality and not content

Most directories are trash and will take pretty much any link. Your best bet would be to find niche directories to submit to that relate to your site. The rest will be a waste unless they are high PR and contain only quality links.

True, many directories are a waste of time but it is easy to ignore those. Niche and regional directories are extremely useful.

Ah, another one of this thread:rolleyes:...Why would you think it's a waste of time, what other alternative do you have in mind, if you don't mind sharing that is.

Can't get anymore simpler on getting your website index by submitting to just one directory that is index by SE.

Try it yourself with any good half-descent web directory with your new site and within a short time you'll see the SE crawling on your pages. I guess that's where the Web directories come's in, it helps you get notice by SE.

If you would have said, "Are some/most web directories a waist of time", then I would have said "yes". By saying it as a whole, you're disrespecting those that actually like what they do and tries to be good at.

In general web directories are useful for your sites, there are those some/most that aren't good, just like any other type of sites.

    I believe that directories that
    - review the submissions for site quality,
    - check the old listings if they still exist,
    - and are niche or regional directories,

are very much worth submitting to.

I wouldn't say their dead just not as useful as before. Backlinks from authority directorys like dmoz, botw, and yahoo directory still helps as far as seo goes.

You just shouldn't really on directory links as your only source of backlinks.
