I was wondering if getting backlinks from irrelevant sites with low or no PR will affect my site PR?

yes it definitely does help. Most sites have links pointing to them that are not relevant to the content of the site. This is natural and google and other search engines recognise this too.

It shouldn't affect your PR. At least it never has with me no matter how many irrelevant backlinks I build.

Can I ask, why is PR so important to you anyway?

PR has very little if any influence where ranking is concerned and that should be what matters. Unless you're selling links on your site or something.

You wont get penalized for that..

Linking to irrelevant sites will affect your PR in a good way if the site is clean and has a higher PR than yours.. How do I know? I've done it so many times before.. Never get penalized..

Nothing negative will happen. It can't. If you could effect websites in a negative way, simply by posting on websites which are in fact irrelevant from your own, or your competitors, then everyone would be penalizing eachother. So don't worry about it.

Dcristo basically sums up my thoughts. It won't hurt your PR at all, PageRank (correct me if I'm wrong) is irrelevant to your niche and that of the links you are receiving. Any (dofollow) link will contribute to your PageRank; however, some count for very very little due to excessive outgoing links on the pages or just the fact that the page has no PR itself.

Don't expect a boost with such links.

Nopes, you don't get penalized for having such links. Otherwise people will start building links for others to kill competition.

Getting links from irrelevant websites with PR 0 or less will not affect any boost up in the Page Rank of your website.

If you get high pr irrelevant links then it will effect your site in a very positive way.All links pointing to your site is good.Just make sure they are from good neighborhoods and don`t use software to blast links all over the web.

Link building = relevant quality and quantity ;) Getting links from irrelevant sites wont "boost" anything...and linking 'out' to crap sites could royally damage your credibility and rankings!

I did some research the other on a site ranking #1 on Google for some very popular search terms. And most (99%) of the links were from sites within the theme of this sites niche. While this wasn't a niche I was interested in, you can learn how to do it from studying the sites at the top. Why waste time with irrelevant links when you can put the same effort into relevant links.

It will definitely help you but not to great extent, they will count as backlink and backlinks are always good
