How to do SEO for the keyword "credit card'?

You've picked one of the most competitive phrases on the web... Good luck... This was one of the targeted keyword phrases on a PR7 site I SEO'd for a few years that had 4.7 million external inbound links according to Google. You are going to likely need tens of thousands of followed links if not hundreds of thousands of links with "credit card" as or in the link text to break into page 1... You are competing with Visa.com, creditcard.com, mastercard.com, citicard.com, discovercard.com americanexpress.com, chase.com, bankofamerica.com, capitalone.com, etc.

Unless you have 10s of thousands or hundreds of thousands of US dollars per month to buy links from high PR relevant sites (like many of them do), you're not likely to be on the page 1 in this lifetime. And yes Google knows they buy links... so don't think that reporting them is going to get them in trouble. The big boys play by different rules than smaller sites do.

Google is not going to penalize them in any significant way because they know that users would think their search engine sucked if someone searched for "credit card" and none of the above sites showed up. While they might devalue their paid links, those sites have hundreds of thousands if not millions of non-paid inbound links with "credit card" as the link text.

Small relatively unknow sites not showing up on the the other hand are of no consequence to Google and would not be missed by the average Google user should such a small site not show up. So Google has no problem penalizing small sites for such infractions.

 

Is this real? What is with the link for "link building" in your signature?

Must be a Geo thing Canonical - I have to switch over to Google.com from Google.co.uk just to see what it gives me for that (or any other search term), drives me nut's sometimes how much difference there can sometimes be between the two, although obvious I find my .com's are pretty much the same across the baord but my .co.uk domains differ on Google.com soemtimes greatly and at other times just slightly.

 

Do you really what to outrank visa or mastercard for the search term - credit card - ?

It is high computation keyword, You can make link from relevant nice with high PR.

 

Extremely difficult keyword. I'm not sure how well my usual strategy (focused mainly on article distribution) would work for such a tough keyword (I usually focus on KWs quite a bit less competitive than that) but it seems like it may help.

My Recommendation:

#1 Article Marketing (article distribution services.)
#2 Video Marketing (I'm not sure what kind of videos you could... perhaps showing how you use the site with a screen capture program?)
#3 Forum Sigs (related forums.)
#4 Blog Comments (related blogs. don't worry about "dofollow.")

Make lots of high page rank backlinks, make blog and manage them proper

 

Ignore this talk about article links and blog posts. A kw like Credit Cards is EXTREMELY difficult to rank for. At position #22 you are starting off a lot better than others. Consider the following ideas

#1 - If you are already ranked #22, chances are you have an aged domain with a decent amount of content. Analyze your on site PR structure and sculpt it using advanced onsite optimization tools. Find out if you have all your PR juice by running an anlysis on your redirects (change all 302 to 301) Don't forget to optimize for semantic keyword variations. Ignoring this could be a death knoll in the competition for this type of kw.

#2 - You want to generate linkbait on authority sites and link back to you. There are many tactics that you can research. You need AUTHORITY links.. not BS article submissions. That is for people who are trying to rank for a KW like "plastic toothpicks" or "chiropractor in Indianapolis" (not that these kw are not worthwhile, but they are not CREDIT CARDS)

#3 - Look for authority blogs that rank for credit card rates or credit card offers to guest post for and link back to you. Authority links from related sites is a lot better than you know.

 

Go for a lot of backlinks but use the term as the anchor text. This will really help. Also make sure or title and meta description are correctly optimized for that keyword. Another task would be ti check the keyword ratio on the page you are ranking for the keyword, compare it to the tip competitors for that keyword for a good idea as to what you need to do in order to rise up the SERPS.

 

The keyword "credit card" is very competitive and it need a lot of hard work to rank for it. As you know it is a generic keyword so try to make your site's content as informative as you can and you need to make high quality relevant links to beat the sites like wikipedia, visa and mastercard.

 

Get some really powerful links.. targeted links.. same niche... PR 6+
