What is Latent Semantic Analysis (LSI Indexing)?

Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) is an information retrieval method that organizes information into a semantic structure that takes advantage of some of the implicit higher-order associations of words with text objects. The resulting structure reflects the major associative patterns in the data while ignoring some of the smaller variations that may be due to idiosyncrasies in the word usage of individual documents. This permits retrieval based on the the "latent" semantic content of the documents rather than just on keyword matches. This paper evaluates using LSI for filtering information such as Netnews articles based on a model of user preferences for articles. Users judged articles on how interesting they were and based on these judgements, LSI predicted whether new articles would be judged interesting. LSI improved prediction performance over keyword matching an average of 13% and showed a 26% improvement in precision over presenting articles in the order received. The results indicate that user preferences for articles tend to cluster based on the semantic similarities between articles.

Can any one explain with example?

 

Simply put; LSI or Latent Semantic Index; is merely the related words and terms used on your site or in your articles that support your keyword(s) It enables Google's Algorithms or spider bots to tell more exactly what your article or content is about? And to get your article or content ranked higher in the serps.

So instead of spamming your keyword too many times say like "Golf Swing"

You add golf, golfer, golf ball, golf course, tee, golf shot, hit, drive, driver, golf club, ball, club, fairway, sand trap, par, par 4, birdie, Putting, green, Driving range, irons, 9 iron, woods, 75 yards, chip shot, Putting, putter, clubhouse, caddy, buggy, golf cart, flag, cup, the game of golf, slice, hooked it, Tiger Woods, distance, short game, one plane golf swing, Ben Hogan, golf pro... did I miss anything?

It is easy to tell that this is not someone who is just writing to target the keyword? This is someone who is writing for golfers and golf enthusiasts. It therefore; has more value in Googles Algorithms.

Google will love you and- its program and spider bots will say- hey! this is definitely a Golf authority site/article with tons of value to the searcher! I will rank this higher than those guys who just say "Golf Swing" all day

Now, does anyone know with reasonable certainty if Google is using LSI? If so, that might stimulate some significant re-writes of major pages on our websites. (Roget's Thesaurus, here we come!)

 

Yes they are and my content and articles are all over the first page of Google in every niche I target.
