There is a complete difference in swimming in a pool, and a beach(ocean or lake).

A pool is a big bath tub. The chances of drowning are slim, the length of your swim is limited, and there are dangers of hard/slippery surfaces that have led to all sorts of problems including a friend of mine getting paralyzed.

Swimming at a beach though requires you to have first studied the beach and body of water that created it. You MUST respect the waves, the tide, and the currents. You cannot just dive in as you would a pool. You need to walk out slowly and feel the ground beneath you go farther and farther away as you move out into the water. The swim is absolutely fantastic, especially if you can stand to open your eyes under salt water!

But be extremely careful when navigating a current that seems to not want to let you swim back to shore. If this happens, swim parallel with the shore until the feeling of getting pushed away has decreased and then swim on a shallow angle back to the shore (not perpendicular as you might tire easily, but if you are tired already, be patient and float to regain your breath and energy).

Caution about lakes especially. Lake beach currents have a nasty tendency to cause an effect known as an "undertoe" I do not know much technically about them, except that it feels like a little water tornado that YANKS you down. If you ever get pulled underwater, always try first to get some sort of calibration on which direction will lead you to the surface. Not many things are more frightening than spinning uncontrollably in a wave and not know which way you are supposed to swim to catch your next life-saving breath. In an undertoe, wait until you stop getting pulled then swim in the direction that offers least pressure/resistance, that way is up towards the surface.

I love swimming but in the sea only. I can lay down on the beaches.

The sea in my country is so warm..you would just love it. I go to swim 2-3 times per month. The beaches are near.

Beaches is more for surfing, I don't surf, so when I go to the beach, I just kinda, try to surf or maybe just be in the water :p

Although, I'm really good with swimming in swimming pools, since I train about 5 times a week :p

I used to bathe / swim in the waves of Bay of Bengal when I was a kid and it used to be a thrilling experience. Now my swimming is limited to the bathtub where the leg space is limited :p

IMO, ocean water sucks! It's sticky and tastes HORRIBLE! I would much rather swim in a pool

I'm quite good in swimming in a pool, but I always avoid in a beach. This is because of a bad experience I had before. Moreover the sea water is too bad to be in it!
