I have a domain, and I just got a copyright infringement letter from FOX

I own the domain avatar+some other keywords .com

It has nothing to do with the movie.

    It's actually for avatar airbender.

I got sent a letter; to my AT&T internet service provider.

I don't even use torrents, and the site is currently defunct. I'm really afraid. What do I do right now?

I wouldn't worry too much as the letter reads as a warning.

Asking them for proof of wrongdoing may be in your best interest, if they fail to provide any evidence then they are the ones liable.

nothing to worry abt , scaring tactics being used all over the world right now, but the funny part is that your isp send you that letter since in states as far as i know this not happening to individuals as of now , though i could be wrong .

there have been court rulings which have gone against media crops in word stating that an ip cannot be held as a proof of infringement, so you had a wifi and got cracked happens all the time.. what you should make sure that is isp CANNOT pass your personal info to a 3rd party without a court order.

This doesn't have anything to do with your website - sounds like your Internet Access is the real issue... it sounds like someone using you IP has illegally accessed and watched or copied FOX copyright materials.

If so - that could be a problem.

Your ISP has been contacted and they must address the issue... if you don't satisfied AT&T and their liability concerns you could (at minimum) find yourself without Internet 1 day.

Contact your IPS (AT&T) and find our how you can work with them to show Fox "good faith".

Thanks guys, I think our neighbor is using our WIFI to download avatar clips; the email was referencing a specific torrent that was being downloaded. I appreciate the help, I'm going to contact them about this!

yep, i forgot to add , one of my servers was taken down it was hosted from a American d.c and the guy had rdp on it and he also downloaded that avatar TS using torrents, which is totally against the policy of that d.c , but they never complained about it before but on this movie the server was taken down without any notice in 4 hours , makes sense since it is the largest blockbusters this year and the networks were closing watched , but still beats me why would anyone download a crappy TS of this when not even full blu ray would do justice to this movie:p and since it was it was in the aup and tos of the d.c the guy lost the server due his fault.

you should secure your wifi with WPA since wep is totally useless and using a unsecured wifi is just asking for it.

    Of course!

I used to download TV shows from torrents literally all day long. All of a sudden, one day, my download speed was so slow that it was barely usable. I would also get a spotty connection just when visiting regular websites like Google.

Shortly after, I got a phone call from the cable company reading me a legal script about how I have been sharing copyrighted material. The lady was even reading off the filenames of the torrents. I then had to verbally agree that I got this warning, and that the 2nd one would terminate my cable access. I never used a torrent since then.

The problem is that I was using Bittorrent and didn't notice that the new version I was using had sharing enabled, whether you liked it or not (the old version let you turn it on or off). I never used Bittorrent ever again.

    "your Internet account"

This has nothing to do with your domains as you can see. IF you acknowledge receipt of the letter and say you've looked and there is nothing like that happening, chances are you can go your merry way but be wary of the above.

use newsgroups.you can even download from your isp's news server (if they have one) and won't do anything for downloading copyrighted material as your not uploading.

The slowdown in cable internet is due to comcast actually blocking your access on the Tcp/ip layer. This is a big a deal and the FCC gave comcast a harsh reprimand. However, Comcast is now fighting it on the appellate level in a case against the FCC itself and whether the FCC has the authority to even reprimand them. Hopefully the FCC wins.
