Using content already used on other sites

I am considering starting a niche quotation site - one that indexes and lists quotations from people in a niche field. As there's a high liklihood that most of the quotes are on other websites, my site is not exactly going to have original content. It sort of breaks the rule for having a quality site, but then again those other sites don't 'own' those quotes any more than my site will.

Is this a problem for SEO and Google in particular, and are they are ways to improve the SEO on a site like this?

    Thanks.

    Hi,
Duplicate content can only drop you at SERP results, there's nothing to do elsewise. If your major concern is to rank high to Google then you should use original and unique content rather than duplicate ones. However, for PR, you may go with the duplicate content.
    Thanks!

Since duplicate content is going to be a huge issue and it's unlikely your site is an authority, you're going to need to focus on "breaking" up the content. It's not just the words themselves that will be an issue, it's the formatting and the arrangement. So you need to focus on automatically changing the arrangement of the quotes. Adding unique biographical information and user contributed comments would also be wise.

SEOing quotes is extremely competitive; you'll have to be creative.

I'd imagine that the quotes would be short sentences. And unlikely that you'd have the quotes in same sequence as other exisiting sites. So go ahead - that still counts as uniques.

    all the best.

That's easy to overcome. You can quote and then write about your thoughts on the quotation. In this case, you will have at least 50% unique content.

Leave all this BS and read my suggestion:

Do not post just a quote to fill up a post.

Take a quote which you wish to post on the site and "CRAFT SOME CONTENT AROUND IT".

A simple 100 words of para which lets readers know when this quote was said and in which context. If you do not find context, then just let the readers know when they can use the quote in their usual lives.

Posting only quotes would never get any SEO benefits.
