So i was just wondering what all precautions we need to take. I am bit worried abt drop of PR as PR update can be done soon i feel by old posts. So .. if you must change the domain name, then you can change it. after the change and moving the content over to the new site, do a 301 redirection which will transfer the pagerank form old site to new

I think you should continue with your old domain but if your client want a new domain then you can only do 301 redirect your old site on your new domain it can help to get PR and ranking on your new domain it will take some time and 95% works but 5% can't. So think carefully and if possible then talk again with your client and try to convince him.

He should not change the domain for a single reason: the new domain name is probably a very different name and this will cause confusion to must of the huge amount of users he currently has and so will decrease dramatically user navigation even he has a same rank.

Make sure to verify both sites, add them to google's webmaster tools, and activate the change of address procedure.

No page rank loss if you follow their guidelines and keep both sites identical.

I would keep the old domain just because of the PR and age factor.

I think your domain age matter because search engine also look for the count the domain name as well as the Page Rank of the website in the overall optimization of the websites over the search engines.

    Hi,

According to my personal opinion, the domain age factor really plays an important role and if you have a good age for your website then of course you will get good rankings too.

But now a days with the introduction of Keyword specific URL's i think if you give a try without harming the present site.

Well its aged domain. Your client should go with the same. If he wants new domain. Use 301 redirects, the ranking and page rank transfers on the new domain soon.

Even if u make a 301 redirection it will take up to 3 months to take effect. So you will lose visitors/time/money. So dont do that :))

This is absolutely not true. 301 redirect along with Google webmaster tools "change of address" procedure as stated in my previous post will ensure a safe transfer immediately.

PR is preserved and will show in next toolbar update.
