I have an old travel website. PR is 3 and a few thousands visitors per day. I'm planning to start a new travel related blog. Is it better to establish this blog under its own domain OR in a subfolder of that existing travel site? I mean this for SEO purposes. Thanks
I agree... Making it a subdomain means it gets treated as a separate site and therefore you are starting from scratch trying to make it rank. Making it a subfolder means the blog is content on your main domain, so its pages get to take advantage of things like your main domain's age, domain authority, domain trust, etc. It will also give your main domain a better chance of becoming more of an authority. Sites with inbound external links to LOTS of pages (not just the home page) are seen as more of an authority. Domains with most of their external links pointing to their home page are seen as less of an authority. Blog by their very nature add new content, new pages to your site... and tend to attract links from external sites...
Try the traditional www.domain.com/blog approach. This gives your domain a bit more power as well, and if that content in the blog is relative to the content on the main site, it will work well for you. Also, I dont know if you have a platform already sorted for this, but Posterous is starting to really make way for some great things. Well worth checking them out, especially if you use social media.
I think it is much better to place your blog in subdomain so you will have no problem promoting your blog at the same time it would work well for you considering that it will help you not to spend time so much on promoting it
as everyone said, I will be sure if you make it as subdomain or subfolder of your existing PR3 travel, at least the new one can get hundreds of daily visitors. just try it and share the result here too
I agree with this, visitors to the existing website will be inclined to view the new blog also, and the pagerank also you will get quickly, eventually I think if you start new blog on new domain then it takes lot of time to gain in rankings up to the level you have already experienced and corresponding traffic also...
