Handling Email Threats

I can't believe this is actually happening to me, but...

From a Yahoo group I was participating on, I received a private email from someone on my Yahoo email account asking me to explain my views. His email address is and his signature lists the company he works for.

I explained my views, and what I got in response was laced with extreme profanity. I later made a short comment along the lines of that he shouldn't write like that and does his employer know what he is doing.

What was emailed back concerned me greatly. He directly threatened my life. I'm taking it especially seriously because, as a martial artist, I recognize the type of language he used as used by martial artists who compete.

My life has been threatened by a sicko by email. Who do I call? How do i report this?

Buy yourself a gun. If this is not an option, go to police. (having dealt with the police myself I prefer option #1)

Depending on the police in your area its worth logging it with them, take some proof, at least its reported, i would not take the threat on your life seriously, its the internet and plenty of crazies get their kicks in various ways.

Although its none of my business, was the yahoo group controversial, religous, political? i have no idea as i dont use them but if its along those lines and not related to the webmaster world then i could see where that fits in.

    1. he's probably just threatening you since you sort of threatened to report him to his employer
    2. but no harm taking precautions - so just go to the police and make a report - see what they say
    3. does he even know who you are and where you stay?

Does he know where you live or know you personally? If not, ignore him. What can he do? Email you to death?

Are you in the same city? Is there any reason you cannot report it to the police? A gut feeling tells me it could have been related to religion and politics and possibly get out of hand, unless this guy lives within a mile of you there is really nothing to worry about.

I have never known anyone take a threat on life seriously before online unless there is more attached to the whole situation.

Relax and forget it or get down the cop shop today and tell them your in danger (which i really think your not )

Death threats are illegal, get the man put away before he
hurts somebody, or worse encourages others to make
    death threats.

Lots of people say things over the internet they'd never consider saying or doing in the 'real' world. People just use anonimity as an excuse to act like assholes.

Personally I wouldn't worry, if you do feel threatened then save the emails and contact the police.

I've had a few wackos threaten me over email throughout my years as a webmaster. I found that ignoring them has worked best. Well I usually ban them from my site and then ignore their onslaught of threats for about a week until they get bored. Just make sure your information is private or fake when creating online profiles, etc. Also, if you have a site, keep you whois data vague or to a bare minimum. That is an easy way for a crazy person to find you.

If he won't go away, report him to the police and his ISP. And be sure to save all the emails in case you need them someday!

    Good luck.

This may be in bad taste but im gunna anyway...

Maybe he has already got to him and the warnings are too late ;)

Seriously though, take it with a pinch of salt, a real death threat would be worrying if the person is in front of you and has a cold hard stare in their eyes as they make a promise to you..

You would have to be involved in some crazy group of some kind or got involved in an unusual discussion that goes beyond everyday talk, or offended this person way beyond normal expectations.

    Relax

i agree with wizardofx ... report him, get him put away etc.

i think actually that the FBI have a section on their site dealing with internet related crime... death threats will definitely come under it!!

I don't think you should report him - at all. A lot of people say stupid things the Internet ... they think it's safe and anonymous when in all reality it simply isn't. I'd lean towards giving him the benefit of a doubt.
