Do people focus on SEO too much?

It seems like so many websites focus on SEO more then anything. What happened to creating a quality website, with quality unique content, making it look sexy, and actually making people want to join your website.

I've seen some high ranking results for websites when I was trying to get some information, and pretty much 3/4 of the sites on the first page of Google were crap

I think it depends alot on the type of site really, but yes as a whole there is far to much focus now on SEO work and the wrong ways of doing SEO work. Unfortunatly most of the SEO trade is full of spammers who will do anything to get asmany links as they can as quick as they can at any cost.

Then also design the site specificly for best SEO results apposed to designing the site to be the most attractive and useable for the client looking at the website then keeping in mind while making the design SEO factors.

Exactly, and all these crappy websites appear high up with shitty content, pop up ads, LITTERED with google ads.

And I hate websites that use an "SEO" design. Those too, are LITTERED with google ads intermixed within the content so its a pain in the ass to read

SEO design is always important, but should be incorporate in the initial planning. SEO may soon trickle off and be replaced by pure social media promotion :)

SEO is just one part of marketing. If you don't give consumers what they what, it does matter how traffic you get.

The trick is (obviously) be the best at both. Drive traffic to an aesthetically pleasing, well designed and informative site and they will stay awhile. The more"crap" sites that are out there the better the chances quality sites will attract quality traffic.

I think people tend to focus on SEO way too much. SEO is a good thing, but optimizing a site targeting higher visitor conversions is much more beneficial. After all, Google recommends tailoring the website to fit the needs of the visitors rather than the search engines, which means Google is probably doing the same thing and will rank you accordingly.

Do SEO for traffic, yes. But what I see from experience is high traffic, and 80% + bounce rates unless you focus on visitors just as much as SEO. Thats all i'm trying to say.

I'd say that in the more competitive niches some of the best sites on the net come out. At least that's what happens to me in my niche.

That's exactly why people focus on seo so much! So they can get good listings -> more traffic to their site -> more ad clicks -> more moolah!

But thats just the average joe schmoe who clicks the googled ads "stealth" moded into the content. If I visit a website like that, I put it on my "do not ever visit this website again" list.

I will take an unpopular website with 50 hits a day that has GREAT content over a site that is PR7 and gets 10000 uniques a day with crap content and littered with ads.

off page seo is a concern.

Quality is the basis as well as onpage seo. without it, all the offpage seo wont give the best results.

I think you have a skewiff idea of what SEO, well good SEO is as what you descrice sounds like bad SEO to me!

Bas as in the type of SEO that is performed by all those wningers who claim things are always changing and they have to find the next trick to get their crud ranked after Google or whoever found a way to kick their butts for producing rubbish.

I do think SEO is a very important part for you to do on your website. But you should never forget the website itself. Making great articles, making the site for the visitors and not for the search engines. But you do get more traffic because of SEO.

SEO is very, very important if you know how to do it right. It allows you to create a website or blog, build tons of content and allow people to find your site through Google - no marketing work on your part. This is huge, as it allows you to make money on your website without marketing or doing anything!
