SEO 2.0 for shopping sites

The more and more I hear people talking about SEO 2.0 techniques, like social components (blogs and social media), not competing with others but cooperating, content and stuff... They talk that common SEO is doomed to fail (link exchanges: reciprocal and 3-way).
I agree that content is the most important, and SEO pointed to visitors, not search engines. I am against Black Hat SEO and spamming.

    But I have a question:

What would be SEO 2.0 strategy for shopping sites where you don't write content so you can't publish your articles on social media sites like Digg (if you did that people would consider this spamming)? If you make a blog comment I bet people would consider this spamming (write a comment saying: Check this great acne treatment product!).

Article trading on sites like e-zine, as I experienced doesn't provide link juice as I would like it to be. There are tons of articles and it is a small chance that mine would be chosen among thousands. Have you heard of online applications which submit your articles to hundred article directories? Well, it seems that they don't provide some noticeable benefits (at least in my case).

Maybe I could contact bloggers to review shopping products, but it looks more like regular SEO than SEO 2.0. And everyone who tried it knows how time consuming it can be giving back so little links.

So, what would be the best solution for shopping site promotion? Is there any other way except link exchange which is considered not to be SEO 2.0 strategy? I'd like to hear your opinion.

    Thanks

Yes, I see Mat's point. But the problem is what to do when I get a client that I need to promote. A client who already has an e-commerce site. But it's cool that you sent that video, Camay123. I totally forgot that I can try to find an answer on youtube. This one didn't exactly answer my question, though, but I'll try to look for some more.

If anyone has something in mind, don't hesitate to write here.

have you tried link building, ppc advertising and general promotion through word or mouth, facebook, twitter, craigslist, and forums. Just start talking about a product that you have a passion about and it will gain interest.

I am doing link building but it is hard if you have not much to offer, just products which often is considered as spamming (if you want to comment on blogs, it's a spam, and if you use social media like digg, your link to a product can be considered as spam). If you want to exchange links very often you can't find people interested in products on your site, because bloggers very often are not interested, so sending mails is time consuming and gives very little for much effort.
