You might have heard this stories - Google Kills Bush’s Miserable Failure Search & Other Google Bombs and Obama: Tops For “Who Is Failure” In Google - things like this become necessary for Google to change their algorithm and nullify some SEO work like this..

There are still controversies over some website's ranking in Google; and reported that they don't have much good content to get rank in Google.

Google likes to satisfy user's query and they really like to give top ranks for quality sites. But sometimes, good SEO work really will get top ranks even they lack somethings.

So its become essential for Google to nullify some SEO works (not fully although) and give priority to top quality sites. So they are changing their algorithm and you can't avoid those...

    Hello friend,

Yes now we should write fresh content and use quality of links not quantity of links.

Google changes its ranking methods constantly. And it makes no wonder because the Internet itself gets changed day by day. If you serious about website promotion, your main concern should be continued optimization of your pages. It's the only thing that really matters.

how should google understand if my content is of quality? if it only looks out for some
synonyms and keyword density or word count and the like I would doubt that having
these factors our content will be of high quality.
the only factor to determine if quality exists is the visitor. if he likes the content he
will stay longer on our site. so, this could be one (or maybe the only) quality factor
    imo.

That's correct. And visitor will stay long on your pages (and visit them often) only if there is good and valuable content.

Matt Cutts said that last year they change there algorithms every other day. (Which incidentally is also the number of new products/features they were releasing in the same frequency)

One thing they have changed is that they have added page load speed as a significant factor. Once you've finished your other on page optimization, it would be a good idea to have a look at page load speed, and optimize your images, and reduce the number of queries.

Google Cafeine has now been implemented apparently. That will have an affect on some types. Updated content and social media could become more important from now on.

Google will not change completely, but it is adding some addition features in its search functionality. Sites with fast loading get top comparatively site with huge loading time.
