Using google keyword tool is just a half of the story. You also need to make sure these keywords have a chance to score hign in search engines. Here's how it works: keywords with huge volume of searches not necessary will help you to get on top of the google. You need to choose hign volume searches words with low competition on the web. That's tough but possible. For example, keyword with 200,000 searches and 20mln competing sites will have no chance compare to keyword with 2,000 searches and only 20 competitiors. Its better to have 2000 visitors for right keyword than none if you are on page 200 of google.

P.S. let me know if you need detailed description of how to check competition out

I agree with Jim4767. For Seo purposes, you probably should try to rank for keywords with a low number of competing pages (<50,000). A good tool is Market Samurai.

Your are asking the wrong question.

You do not put up a website first and then look for keywords.

You do your keyword research first and then design your site around those keywords.

The name of the game is creating value.

If you want to make money, find a need and fill it, it is that simple. The rest is implementation.

So, start by measuring your strength: what are you really good at that you can offer as a service?

Then focus on this. How can you sell your strength as a service?
What value can you give and ask money in return for?

From these answers you will find your topic.

Now is the time to start keyword researching.
    Then build your site.

If you already decided on the website you are going to build, ask the following:

Who am I trying to reach?
What will my visitors be looking for?
What are the keywords they will use to find what they are looking for?
    How do I fit in?
What value will my visitors see?

    Hope this helps.

    Market Samurai+Word tracker+Google tool.

Finding a good keyword is the hardest part in SEO.

Also another option that I do not prefare since you should learn how to research for your own keywords is to use kate service from Warrior forum shes a good keywords researcher.

    Regards.

The best way is to figure out what you want to market or what you have "the most" in your content :D

I usually check my competitors keywords and then chose those keywords, where competitors ranked lower.

Everything has been mentioned, just to add to it, sometimes you need to think and put yourself in the shoes of your audience. Then come up with the words they would search and then check the search volume of such words.

It's called market research and anybody who has some business sense will accomplish this task before launching a web site. Once you have identified target markets you can then start writing content to them. After that you can get an idea of what major keywords people are using. Keyword research is merely a sub component of the overall web marketing strategy contrary to what some 'SEOs' will have you believe.

Google Keyword Research Tool is really a useful tool. But I also agree with others that you should find the keyword in which you can build your website about.

You should conduct proper researches and studies to be able to determine what keyword best suit your ability over the Internet.

You can also use alexa keyword tool. Actually all tools are effective, try to search also about keyword density in google. It is also a big help in looking for a right keyword for your site.
