Do you use h1 tags

I am interested to know how many people actually use h1 tags? Personally I only choose to use h1 tags on my "main" search engine posts but I do wonder the value of them.

It would be interesting to see how many people use them...

I must admit I have never use anything beyond h1 (i.e h2 onwards), does anyone know from good authority how beneficial they are?

I use h1 & h2 tags on every page. It only takes a second so why not use them? I also use bold & italics too.
Here is the deal. Nobody really knows for sure except Google and other search engines wether or not they are considered by search engines. So if I use them and you don't, and it turns out they do consider them, that puts me one up on you:))

this is old school onpage optimization which i doubt has any value these days. i personally dont bother with H1 tag anymore. lot of advancement has been made in the line of site development and the days of using notepad to hand code an HTML site is long gone. you can get the same result using the font feature on any html editor so technically the puspose H1 tag used to serve has been replaced

    Top advice.

I don't use H1 tags for SEO, I only use tags like this if it makes sense to do so.

Not sure im agreeing with you.

Here is a video made by Matt Cutts :

    http://www.youtube.com/user/GoogleWebmasterHelp#p/u/160/GIn5qJKU8VM

Basically the question was : is it ok to use more than one h1 tag ?

He said, if their is a logical reason then yes, byt dont over do it, because people have been overdoing it and does it make any more good because the algo can take this into account.

With that being said, I deduct that using it once or twice can be beneficial.

Plus, the google seo beginners guide referes to using properly the header tags. look here:

    http://www.google.com/webmasters/docs/search-engine-optimization-starter-guide.pdf

Well, it can make sense from a readability perspective if you don't overdo it. So I guess if the page reads well with H1, H2 etc. tags then use them otherwise I think the SEO benefit is so minimal that it's not worth overdoing it just for the SEO value.

I would highly recommend reading Seomoz's post on SEO best practices. If you scroll down a little they talk about H1 tags and how they are no longer that important for search engines.

erm, h1 tags don't exist purely for SEO reasons you know. they exist for a semantic structural flow within your documents to seperate key pieces of content.

USE THEM. and also make sure you also use h2, h3, h4...

absolute rubbish. it's more important now than ever before that you avoid WYSIWYG editing. you clearly have no idea what you're talking about - heading tags should be used and you should NEVER use a "font feature" (whatever that is, i assume you mean button) to style text - you should be using unobtrusive CSS!

h1 tags are heading tags. this tells the search engine which words are used as headings. I'm sure its useful and everyone should get into the habit of using them. font tags is old school. you should always use stylesheets to define styles.
