Cpanel help: how to convert a subdomain to an add-on domain?

Discussion in 'Site & Server Administration' started by jim, Aug 28, 2006.

I have a hosting account with cpanel that currently has a subdomain (ie somestuff.mysite.com) that I want to make an addon domain (ie somestuff.com). Since the somestuff folder is full of tricky database driven stuff that I paid a lot of money to have done, I want to make sure that doing the addon domain (eg somestuff.com) and making it point to the subdomain with the same name (eg somestuff.mysite.com) wont overwrite or somehow delete the stuff in that folder.

Anyone have any idea what the process is for doing an addon domain when the subdomain folder is already full?

The best and easiest thing to do is ask your host for help. That's what you're paying them for in a sense. They should help you and get it straight in no time.

    best thing to do is:

    1. backup everything first - you can do this via the control panel
    2. create a new folder and copy the contents of the somestuff folder into the new folder
    3. delete/cancel the subdomain via the control panel
    4. create a new add-on domain
    5. copy the contents in the new folder into the new add-on folder

    good luck...

Someone else said there's a better way. Delete the subdoamin (which doesn't delete the folder) and then do the addon domain. That sounds easier so I'm going to try it and will let you know if it works.
