Do Digg and Bookmarks hurt Google PR?

I was quite happy to achieve a Google PR1 a month or two ago, for a pretty small site to just be acknowledged by Google that I exist :)

But yesterday I decided to work on my SEO, started refining my keywords and I signed up for Digg, Delicous, MyBlogLog.. and bookmarked, added my site, linked blogs..

I lost my Google PR today! I only had PR1 to begin with and was actively working on improving it when I lost it. Seems very odd to me. Is there a connection? Has anyone else experienced that? And if that is the case, I think increasing my site traffic would actually be more important than the PR number but still makes me feel like I am going in the wrong direction!

I don't think bookmarking can do any negative impact on your website page rank or overall rankings

You lost PR because google updated PR for all sites today. it is not because of social bookmarking. according to me if you did this socialbookmarking (especially digg) before 10-15 days, you could have get PR 1 or 2.
Google PR mainly dependent on back links from high pr sites. so according to me social bookmarking will help you to get PR and also will bring traffic through it.

Why would Digg or bookmarking hurt PageRank? Backlinks help PR.

Some internet surfing led me to pose the question but a lot of the articles that I read were older.

I will just keep it up and see what my next page rank brings :) I would trade traffic for page rank so I wouldn't stop that either way but it was a really odd coincidence/timing to lose my page rank the day that I added social bookmarking tools!

Adding your site/s to the likes of Digg should be seen as only good news and should not drag the sites down.

You definitely were not hurt by submitting to Digg. In my observation though, it takes a while before a new site can really know what direction PR is going as it fluctuates quite a bit when a site is new.

Where would you get the information it's bad? Submit to as many bookmarking sites as you want, as long as you only submit your article once. It won't hurt, and honestly it can only do good in the end with more backlinks and PR juice, plus maybe a small influx in traffic

    Hi, MNRachel

I think you might have not lost your PR. Google would not update a site's PR in such a short period. :)

On the contrary, backlinks from sources you mentioned above like digg would help in your PR a lot. :)

    Have a nice day,

Social bookmarking sites are preferred source for new web pages for search engine. So it is not hurting PR.

Don't worry, keep submit your links in bookmarking sites. Most of the bookmarking sites provides nofollow links. So it won't hurt you by saying you are over doing link building.

Any number of incoming new links cannot possibly damage your PR. That part is sure. Because if it were so, you only have to use your competitor URLs for bookmarking to hurt THEIR pr.
