Four Essential Human Freedoms - Norman Rockwell

Norman Rockwell produced oil paintings of the Four Freedoms in 1943, inspired by a State of the Union speech made by Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1941. They are freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear.

I can understand the freedom of speech and freedom of worship, but not as much, the freedom from want and freedom from fear.

What do you think of these paintings?

Freedom from intimidation, example: Iran and the Chinese Al Qaeda. Fear not to protest or to speak, express, travel etc,.

Norman is the one of the greatest of all time. Love his work.

I will just add that the last 2 "freedoms" taken from FDR seem to endorse positive rights, which is something our founders intentionally avoided.

Norman Rockwell was obviously an idealist, life as he painted was not really universal back then.

I agree Nate, how can we have the freedom not to want or to fear? When I had created this thread, I hadn't read the FDR speech in its entirety. This part was at the very end of his speech, which I suppose is what inspired the paintings?

Africa will take longer to develop because most of its citizens were taken during the slave trade. When they realize how important it is for a country to modernize they will but for the meantime it's all tribes and worship :p

After reading that Rebecca I see FDR was as much of an idealist as Norman Rockwell. :D

    Go outside!:)

"Courage is not the lack of fear but the ability to face it."
    ---- Lt. John B. Putnam Jr. (1921-1944)

There are a few (or perhaps more than a few) things, that I might disagree with FDR about.

Not without a check from the government to help me overcome my fear. Your words, while encouraging, don't solve my "problem", and my rights are being trampled on.
