yes they do help...they are not the magical answer that everyone is looking for. As a part of a comprehensive linking program they will add diversity to your backlinks.

Some people think they help extra, I dont think so though. Best is always getting links from related websites.

.edu and .gov links certainly have a strong link value but make sure when you are trying to link to them, your website has some sort of relevance to it.

These do not help at all at Google. They are TLD agnostic. They could care less whether the site linking to you is a .info, .biz, .com, .net, .org, .edu, .gov, or whatever.

Getting a link from a URL on a .edu or .gov domain does no more for your rankings than getting one from a .com. that is equally as relevant as the .gov or .edu and has the same PR and uses the same link text.

.edu and .gov links are sought after because typically these sites are well linked and have a high PR... or at least their home page has a high PR. But VERY few people can get a .edu or .gov site to link to you from their high PR pages... If anything, people typically get links from student blogs and such with carry practically NO PR since those pages themselves are not well linked.

A very small percentage of .edu and .gov sites (those that have been around since the beginning of the internet like harvard.com) might have a high domain trust factor and therefore might pass you a miniscule boost in rankings because it increases your sites domain trust factor. But most .edu and .gov sites are no more trusted than a lot of established .com and .org sites that have been around for a while.

The only advantage of the sites is that they normally hold a good PR, however they are usually well moderated and the article or comment that is left on the site needs to have good content and also be relevant content to your keyword/niche...

Basic SEO tells us, only to leave links on site that are relevant to your site..

All the best & Good Luck

It really do a good help, but i think it has no more weight than .com links, but they can increase the link popularity!

Backlink from an authority site always help and normally most of the .edu and .gov sites carries high authority and have lots of backlink from many different sources. This is the only reason why links from such sites carries some extra weight. Otherwise there is no difference in taking link from .com, .net, .org or .edu.

There is a lot of evidence to suggest that the .edu and the .gov domains carry more weight for SEO.

You will never get backlink from home page of some .edu or .gov sites.

Everybody here is talking about domains with .edu and .gov extensions. It may be blog, forums, or resource pages of websites.
