Well when i search for a new domain I make a text file with lots of keywords related to what the content will be on the new website. Then a mix them up add extra words like "Free", "online" etc so say one of my keywords was "Games". It would become "FreeGames.xxx" or "OnlineGames.xxx".

You can research your keywords or niche first then base your domain on that. That would probably be the best domain for you.

I don't trust the domain suggestion sites. If you can't easily think up the domain name, how can you attract others to buy it?

    My practice is
    1) select a keyword for you
    2) use google search tool to get related keywords, check if the keywords domain names are available
    3) if the domain name has been taken and not developed yet, try to contact the owner to buy it if it's really good.

The best are already taken but you may always do some research at SEDO, Afternic or TDNAM... good luck.

Most of the best domains are already purchased "however" domain speculation is worth a go...

Search through google news for new technologies and breakthrough advances etc, via the google adwords keyword tool find the best searches related to these new products/applications then see if the domains for those phrases are free to register. If the news has just been released and you find a domain which is a dead cert then buy it, if cash is tight and you are unsure just track the search numbers for a couple of months to see if there is a steady increase. If you see a steady increase then invest in the domain/phrase, this is obviously a risk as you stand the chance of losing out if you delay however is best if you are short on finances.

Anyhow if you get lucky you should eventually purchase a domain that will be of true value, this can either be developed in the future or sold to an interested party for a healthy profit.

    Good luck.

The answer to your question differs greatly depending on whether you are looking to purchase a domain for the purpose of reselling, or are actually looking for a domain for a real purpose (ie building a site). In the latter case, make sure the domain is RELEVANT to the content of your site.

First, decide the niche then choose keywords to be more specific in your search. Get help from key word search tools. Also you can improve your search via domain name registration sited which give you list of available domains.

you gotta be careful with domain suggestion tools such as the one provided by godaddy, if you find a good domain or make a few searches on a certain domain name they will flag it and tell you that it's already taken but it might be available for sale for a higher price. I usually use inmotionhosting.com to buy all my domain names (their registrar is melbourneit.com.au). Alternatively you can use whois.net to search for expired or deleted domain names. Good luck!
