I am creating a website for the first time and I understand that the overall display resolution of the website is important for user friendliness. My question is, which resolution is the best?

There are many different display resolutions that are used nowadays by the general market of online users and your aim is design your website for the greatest percentage group of users. The greatest user percentage for display resolution is 1024x768 and higher. My recommendation is that you work around a resolution fitting for that group of users.

You should refer to these Display Resolution Statistics to check the other percentages used today and it can also explain a little more on the topic to help you make up your mind.
