Can I copy content?

    Hi,

I have just created a blog and I want to know if I can copy news from other sites (such as the BBC) and put the full article on my blog, providing I link to the source and don't claim it as mine? For example, I post the article and at the bottom it says "Read Original Post From The BBC" and it links to the original?

    Thanks.

The short answer is no. You cannot copy content without the express permission of the copyright owner - even if you put an attribution link at the bottom. You can write your own short summary and add a relevant sentence or paragraph from the original but not the whole article.

    BTW: IANAL.

Thanks for your answer. I have decided to write unique articles (or write from scratch with quotes from certain articles).

    Cheers.

You can paraphrase but not copy exact content.

No, you can't just paraphrase. You can use an article as a source, but you can only use a small portion of the article while quoting it. Don't give out advise when you don't actually know what you're talking about.

You can rewrite the article and give proper attribution to the source.

    NO!!!!

Merely citing a source is not ok. The laws require you to obtain express permission (obviously written is the best form).

I copied contents to post in one of my sites. key in 'FREE ARTICLE" on google or yahoo and you get hundreds of sites giving away contents. they will let you copy their contents as long you put a reference back to the source. just read the TOS.

Yeah, that's the thing, some blogs allow it. I know when I ran texasdiscussion.com (coming soon as I again have time for it) that I allowed people to use my articles that I had written so long as they posted a source at the end of the article.
