I just just on www.seobook.com, and I noticed they had a high pagerank (6).
So I go to see how many backlinks they had, and it was a whopping 154,000+ backlinks.

How is this even possible? Wow, that amazes me!:confused::confused:

I think it's probably achieved from the development of their 'SEO for Firefox' plugin. For them developing firefox tools has promoted them traffic and links via word of mouth across the web and hence their success in the SEO world.

Another marketing site following in seobooks footsteps is quirk.biz/ they too have developed a plugin called 'Search Status for Firefox' a tool not to dissimilar to seobook's. Again similar traffic and PR metrics. So in a nutshell code yourself (or hire a coder) a firefox plugin that could be beneficial to the SEO community at large and you'll most probably achive the same results. :D

quirk.biz - search status for firefox

if you keep building links, over few years you can have a lot of links. if you have some good link baiting going on, then it will grow even lot faster

I think it is really hard to do it alone, life is too short and spend it on link building would be too stupid. It is much better to hire a team to do this job.

I'm curious how a firefox extension would provide backlinks. I do agree it is a great way to market by word of mouth, but word of mouth does not provide PHYSICAL backlinks to your site.

When someone creates a firefox extension, is the author's link to his site put in the extension?

It's not too surprising considering SEO Book is a well established authority site and probably gets natural links on a constant basis every day for years. I think they still rank in the top 5 for "seo" on Google page 1.

Yahoo Site Explorer gives a good general picture of backlinks.

Yeah SEO Book has been around for a while and has GREAT content. It's something we can all aspire to be at some point. I do know they get at least one BL from me, since I use their FF extension pretty often.

Now that's what I call word of mouth! quality SEO tools and apps seem to be natural link bait for their developers and it's only natural that forums, web news sites and similar media become the catalyst to this style of link building.

154,000 backlinks is easily achieved. Think about the amount of articles etc that people link into for information regarding SEO? That my friend is what we call organic link acquisition. Now go look at Adobes link popularity :-D

well easy achieved if effort is put into it.
Well try making link building a habit like 10 links a day and every day of the month for a year.
you can easily get 3650 links~~!!!
well if only 10..try 30 or something..it just numbers game i guess..

Simply use the link: modifier in a google search (eg link:www.yoursite.com) but it’s not accurate. you cant also try Google Webmaster Tools, and the ‘links tab’ in those tools.
Yahoo Site Explorer is also used to know the same.
