    Okay, school's back in session and I hate math, so help my kid please :D

    Roller Blade Word Problem:

    Raceway consisted of 3 loops.

    Each 1/2 loop was 1-mile long.

    The signal was given at 2:15pm.

    The skaters were to race around the course once.

    When the race was over, they had 3 winners.

    Samantha was in first place. She crossed the finish line at exactly 2:26 pm and she'd only fallen 4 times.

    Russ finished in 2nd place at 12 minutes and 15 seconds; he'd fallen only once.

    Brett came in third place, finishing at 2:30 and had not fallen.

    Each player lost 15 seconds each time they fell.

    How fast did each of the players skate.

    Samantha
    Russ
    Brett

    Calculate amount of time skating:

    Samantha = 11m - 15s*4 = 10m
    Russ = 12m:15s - 15s = 12m
    Brett = 15m

    Calculate speed of skater:

    Samantha = 6miles/10m = 36miles/hour
    Russ = 6miles/12m = 30miles/hour
    Brett = 6miles/15m = 24miles/hour

    Uhh.. that's what I came up with. Hope that helps. :)

    Thanks maks, but for future reference, I'm a blonde and I honestly had a hard time following your answer, meaning I'll have an equally or harder time trying to explain it to my 4th grader ... but I think I figured it out.

    Samantha raced it in 10 mins and that goes into 60 (minutes in an hour) 6 times; so 6 times 6 miles is 36mph ... and so on for the others ... ?

    Thanks again!

    Oh. Sorry.

    Okay, taking Samantha as an example:

    It took her 11 minutes to finish the race, but she fell 4 times. So the total time she actually spent skating is 11 minutes minus the 60 seconds she spent falling (each fall was 15 seconds), which makes 10 minutes.

    If the course is 3 loops and half of each loop is 1 mile, then a full loop is 2 miles. This makes the course 6 miles.

    So, to get the speed, we need to divide the distance traveled by the time it took to travel that distance which gives us 6mi/10minutes. I'm assuming you want the speed in miles per hour, so we can multiply 6mi/10minutes times 60minutes/1hour to get it in hours. This gives us 360miles/10hours. Obviously, you want miles per 1 hour, so divide both by 10.

    36miles/hour.

    Hope that's a little more helpful.
